So my wife teaches high school, and she just called me and said that a student of hers died... Because the girl was driving drunk and going the wrong way on the interstate (I-70) and hit another car, whose driver is in critical condition, and I was pretty indifferent about it except my wife could tell I think the kid is a piece of crap, albeit a dead piece... She is sad and I have no words of comfort because anything I say would be a lie... Anyway, I think she might be upset with me now but WTF! Stupid ass high school kids that I don't know doing stupid ass things and I'm supposed to be all like I'm sorry they died? I did say I hope the other driver ends up okay... So, how could I better handle this situation in the future?

Well... you are right but not because of the drunk kid.I am sorry a kid died young but seems it's her own fault and I feel more sorry for the unsuspecting victim in the other car.

"We have to get a handle on the kids drinking and driving. Look at this horrible mess. A young kids life snuffed out way too early and another person hurt from the conduct. It is a double tragedy." The line in quotes, text somebody tell them you are calling and just to go with the conversation. Make sure she hears you saying that above stuff. In other words, fake it.

Or be outraged at the parents who allowed a child to behave in such a way. Yep, until they are grown and on their own its the parents fault. Some will say Im sure mom and pop didnt allow her to drink and drive. But I say with or with out direct permission ole mom and dad permitted it will even if it were by the not teaching baby girl responsibility for her actions. It is sad that a youth has lost her life because she was failed by ber parents. And that another person is suffering for their failure as well. yes there is an age at which you can no longer blame poor ole ma and pa. But its not in ya teen years. Teens are mush heads that need lots of guidance.

Dave, Your feelings toward the kid are mine also. But, If i can share just a bit of advice which you can heed or ignore, I think where you probably should be directing your feelings is toward your wife. Ya see, no matter how much apathy you hold for a kid you probably didn't really know, your better half actually had a personal connection and is now feeling many emotions that accompany tragic loss. Be kind, be thoughtful, and by all means don't share your judgement - and if you have - appologize, and mean it.

You're not being a dick, you're just showing the same empathy many non-motorcyclist show towards motorcyclists' and skydivers' deaths. Regardless it's a sad story and a tragedy that could have been avoided.

Like you, I tend to have little empathy for stupidity and selfishness. And it makes me angry.
That is, until I am reminded that back in my teens it was almost socially acceptable to drive/ride drunk or under the influence and I did exactly that many times and was extremely fortunate not to have had a tragedy occur. Was i a thoughtless, stupid and irresponsible teen? Absolutely. And for a long time after my teens I am ashamed to admit.
Social acceptance for drunk driving has gone but kids wanting to get wasted on anything and at every opportunity hasn't changed at all. And neither has teens being mostly selfish, stupid and irresponsible.
So in your situation (where I've been all too often), I would just be honest and say they kids actions got me angry because two innocent parties died (one stupid innocent party) but I was forgetting that i did a lot of stupid stuff at her age and my judgement was too harsh. I'm sorry, it really is a tragedy.
Edit... While I was writing this Erle posted the same message (above), but much more succinctly.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I was rude or anything to my wife, but she could tell from my tone that I don't have much empathy for the kid. She knows this about me though. But like any wife, wishes I was different. She's home now and not mad or anything at me, but she is a bit sad. We have a party to go to tonight with all her coworkers, so I'm sure it's going to come up.

Dave , your not a penis with ears... I happen to agree, it is a sad situation BUT......... you can still feel for the wife in her sorrow and that be removed from the stupidity that irresponsibly caused her that sorrow. Hope she gets happier soon and don't beat yourself up to much .

I agree. You should empathize with your wife Dave, and what she is going through. A little understanding goes a long way. Take it from somenone that' s been divorced for 12 years and is often a real dick. I envy the guys that are happily married, here. Don't take your wives for granted.

Couldn't have said it better.
Also, it was a kid, not some 30, 40, 50 year old a$$hole you know from work. Kids don't know for $hit. If you remember being different, I'm betting you are mistaken.
I'm guilty of reacting the same way but I try not to pretend that a 16 year old should have the same judgement as a 30 year old.
Plus, when in doubt, your wife is probably right. If nothing else, that's usually a safe bet on these kind of things.

Many have said it well already, your wife's feeling are what's important here. That is (or at least should be) the most important relationship in your life, after all. So empathize with her, let her talk, and sometimes it's OK to not give voice to your opinions. I'm not saying lie about your feelings but keeping the baffles in can help. (I've had 35 years of practice with this marriage thing).
Also think about the drunk kid's family and the pain they are going through. These things have multiple victims. I'm sure if the stupid kid had known this would happen it wouldn't have. But as a former stupid kid myself I know that the thought never even occurred to her.

Its all terrible, youngster killed, although as a result of something stupid who here has not been close enough to the same fate only to squeak by for whatever reason. I also think teachers have a special spot for all kids, admittedly or not, and i suspect her feeling are much like yours to some extent and understands the view point but it was just a kid! A kid dying learning..... sad sad.

To blame the parents is ...really well kind of lame. I suppose you never did anything your parents weren't aware of. I remember my parents having to sleep or go to work. My living through teenage years was just pure dumb luck.

Lets face reality, as a parent myself I am responsible for my children until they are on their own. Then you can only hope you taught them well. Parents are responsible for their children. A teen is a child. If your teen is an idiot you are to blame. You did not do your job, which is to teach them the things they need to know about life and the world. Its not about if they are doing things you are unaware of. Its about if you taught them that there are consequences for their actions, respect others, and established a moral basis for them to live by. Or if you taught them that they are the most important person in the world, and that they should have all the latest and greatest even if they havent earned it. I always blame the parents when children are arses. I also credit the parents when children are good. You see children dont know anything but what they are taught. This young girl was not taught to respect others, society, and life. She was also not taught that she has a responsibility to society in general. And yes we have responsibilities to the society in which we live. Them main one is to not endanger the lives of the others around you. Then to respect their person and property. Evem if you dont know them. Especially if you dont know them. This young girl was not taught this simple value and was acting totally narsissistic.

I am going to add here being buisy is no excuse. If you take on the job of parent then its a double full time job. Know that you will sacrifice many things. You dont get to have a expensive car at cost to resourses that should be spent on raising your child, time being the main one. If your life style causes you to have to not be the parent you should, then down size your life. Stuff like big screen tvs, and fancy cars are so insignificant in comparison. You may have to skip it so you can be home more with ya children. They need guidance and we excuse absenteeism because we have to work to pay for sh!t we dont need. I have been to many peoples house who say they both have to work and get over time to make ends meet, but the truth is that they are livi g beyond their means. They have all the latest greatest bullshine but their kids are in desperate need of guidance. My answer is trade the escalade for a minivan, sell the 65 inch plasma screen and get a 30 inch regular tv, skip on the vacation to what ever extravagant thing you were gonna do and visit family.

Some couples do have to work and get over time to make ends meet. Hard times are a reality for many. Usually from what I have seen these hard working parents actually have great kids. Probably because the responsibilities layed on the kids to help ma and pa keep things going.

Crazyhorse, one size doesn't fit all and even the most disciplined child does foolish things. Less we forget, as Richard from Australia pointed out, it wasn't too long ago that drinking and driving was culturally acceptable for adults. We forget that prior to about 1980 many states allowed 18 year old drinking and had no open container laws. The original BAC was 2.5 times higher than now, laws can change fast, a culture takes time.
We really don't know enough about this girl to know if she was a "bad" kid or her parents were irresponsible in her up bringing. Humans occasionally do foolish things.

Good point, Mac. Generally speaking if the kid is a sh!t its because the parents are a$$ holes. I just hate it when parents are let off the hook when their kids are total idiots. A woman at a church I use to attend was very indignant when her neighbor wanted her son to clean up the mess he made on their porch when he threw a "stink bomb" at their door. Her son is a jerk but she thinks he is an angel. Then ya have those who have wild teens who say I dont know why my teen is such a screw up. My answer is because they were raised by a moron. Yes I understand even good kids make bad decisions dispite their good parents teaching. It happens.

It is tragic when any teenager losers their life like this, and it is even worse when they cause injury or death to someone else.
I was no where near perfect as a teen, but I respected my parents wishes. This doesn't mean I didn't do some stupid things.
Today there are so many outside influences on teens: friends, television, internet. The parents influence in this reality age is being lost. My Wife's Daughter in the last year has proceeded to lost her car (we took it away about 6 months ago), her cell phone (she lost it, for the third time, and we didn't replace it), internet access (except for school), and just recently her iTouch. It is hard dealing with a teen that thinks they should be able to do whatever they want to. She is 17 going on 30, and we are just trying to make sure she makes it out of her teens.
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Yep Tom,had one similar. Like 17 going on 30 going on 3 She just turned 29 and turned out alright, even if the road was a bit slick and rough at times. My other two never gave us any trouble, and they turned out well too. It's just a little slice of life, dealing with different personalities. Everybody is wired differently than anyone else.

Culture is everything, I was born in 1951 and I thing of the things kids are bombarded with now days compared to my growing up. The TV I watched, the movies, the magazines, time spent playing and on hobbies, the respect for institutions, it's been a brave new world for the last twenty plus years. Someone once mentioned to me, that when we were young we wanted to dress like adults, now adults want to dress like children, sort of sums it up. I feel bad for kids now and pray for their parents. Good luck

Tvc, you are doing the very thing that will have lasting affect. You are teaching yours to be a good person. It isn't easy. I'd bet that yours dont get into much real trouble and you may be saving her life. You deffinately are for the long run. I salute you brother for being what you are supposed to be, a good parent. Bill is clearly a good parent too. Its blood sweat and tears sometimes, but when they turn out good people successful happy and well adjusted you can sit back and smile. My 19 year old boy is out on his own now. He finished school and got his audio engineering degree and has his own apartment down town. He is doing well. It was tough sometimes but he said to me a few months back that he appreciated that I prepared him for the hard world he lives in. He thanked me for being tough on him when he messed up and for the life lessons I taught him. He my son has my respect as an adult now. Its a tough job not for the faint hearted. Those who bear up under the load will reap the reward of respect.

I have to say I was a very bad child but it was not anything to do with my family, it was all me. They tried to teach me right from wrong and to have respect for others. Right down to proper polite table manners. I even had to wait for my mom to take the first bite before easting dinner out of respect. When I live at my grand parents it was waiting for my grandmother and my mom before I started. I was still a criminal and used drugs and drank heavy and went to prison. I am just lucky I never killed myself or anyone else by accident, in fact I never thought I would live past 21. If I had I would have done things differently.I Think in some cases the parents are to blame or partly to blame but not in all. My father was a doctor with a private practice and we had 2 new cars every year but I had to work for and earn everything I had. My fist car, my first bike, etc...Nothing was handed to me teaching me value. I drove drunk many many times and crashed twice once in a car and once on my motorcycle and that time my blood alcohol level was .49 and that wasn't an out of the ordinary night of drinking for me. So all the good parenting can't help all some have to learn the hard way. I am now cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.
I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains. Eat right ,Exercise ,Stay fit, Die Anyway!

I did my best as a parent and they turned out pretty darned good but not without bumps. Two were great the whole ride, one made me polish my parenting skills way longer than I'd hoped.
I tell you what, though. There's rarely a trip to the grocery that I don't see a little kid that I'm guessing is destined for juvie or worse.
My wife and I busted our butts to provide, because we could alternate shifts we almost never did child care, we tried our best to set the best example we could (being the best husband and father I could be was/is the biggest motivation I have EVER had)...and one out of three kids still had to work through issues as an adult. I THINK he's got his ducks in a row but I'm not taking ANYTHING for granted.
Good parenting is probably the biggest single factor but great parents can still produce sociopaths. We just have to do the best we can and hope to catch a few breaks here and there. Living in a great neighborhood in North Carolina has got to be a zillion times easier than raising kids in a sketchy neighborhood in Philly or Gary or Brooklyn or Compton.
But, then again, that has a lot to do with why I moved here.
Much like others have commented, my kids are waaaay better people than I was at their age.

Young people do stupid, irresponsible things because they're young and their brain isn't fully wired yet. I know I did some darn stoopid things when I was young. Heck, when I was a young "man". Always a darn shame.

(...hmmmm...now I'm startin' to wonder if the guys over at the BMW forums might be of a little "higher register"???...I mean after all, those GS800s HAVE been intriguing me lately)
Ha ha. I think the order of holiness could be ...
1. Goldwing (because two wheeled cars never offended anyone) 2. BMW (because its German and perfectly balanced so don't argue) 3. Moto Guzzi (better than Triumph because its more exotic) 4. Triumph (trying to be inoffensively rebellious but 50 yrs too late) 5. Victory (HD riders with ambitions above their station) 6. HD (they think this is the top of the list because none of the others are real bikers)
These are my first thoughts of a holiness ranking. Others can no doubt improve and explain why (with humor please).

Seems to me you could still recover from this by empathizing with your wife and the kid's family and friends. There are dozens or hunderds of people broken-hearted over the event. You're not one but you'd probably be wiser and certainly kinder to fake it.
Also, I did so many deeply, deeply stupid things in my teens and early 20's that it colours my thinking about drinking and driving even today. We don't tolerate it, but I sure understand it.

I was listening to 3 Dog Night about 4am or so driving my GTO (not really a classic yet) Stopped in the driveway but left the key on to finish the stupid Jeremiah was a Bullfrog song.
Next I know my wife is tapping on the window. I put the window down and she is all dressed up and the sun is shinning. She says I need to back up so she can mail a letter. Then she has to go to work. She seemed pretty unhappy for some reason. My heart sinks, I get out and check all corners for damage and or blood. I back off the mailbox I ran over missing the driveway and I never again drove drunk, ever.
We do really stupid things when we are young. Had I hit more than my own mailbox my parents would not be to blame.
Experience is something we all needed 5 minutes ago.
Then there are the asshats that never listen and never learn. I believe they are the minority.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Look Folks... None of you know Dave as well as I do. Let's wrap this up by saying: There is no recovery and Angela knows there isn't either. The fact is...Dave IS an ashole and there's nothing he, me, or anybody can do about it. Sorry Dave, it is what it is.

Well Dave, I bet it will be a while before you ask that question here again.

The really funny thing is that it was a rhetorical question to begin with Like Chris said, I already know I'm an ass, all my closest friends know that about me, and most of the people I've met from here can tell you I rarely miss the opportunity to say what's really on my mind My wife is not mad, in fact just 20 minutes ago she asked me if I would go with her to the funeral on Sunday night. I'm going, and I'll be nice. And quiet. My initial reaction was one of anger about the situation. Nobody is free of mistakes, I understand that, but I still reserve the right to be furious at general stupidity.
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.
