I don't want to remove the wheel or brakes or anything so here is my thought. Can i not just take the chrome nut (the one between the risers on the top tripple tree) off, losen the two fork clamp bolts on the tree and lift the hole thing off with the handlebars, slide the shrouds off and put the bars back down until i replace the shrouds, then just tighten everything up? I would not even have to losen the bottom fork clamp bolts i think. This nut has nothing to do with the bearings and stuff for steering right? I have never had any of that off so not sure, just want to powdercoat the top shrouds.

There's two clamps for each tube, loosen those. The nut on the end of the tube is a cap, leave that on.

Yes you can, exactly as your thinking! Just have a towel around that tank so you dont scratch it by accident. those cables keep things nice and tight and the bars make it unstable. Maybe two or three towels just in case. Thats how I chipped my tank once. Pissed me right the F off.

If you can, tie your bars up, from the ceiling. Slightly up and away from your tank. Keeps the cables and wires out of the way and untweaked.

#1 That's a good idea for a bunch of procedures.

Putting it back on, don't forget to "align" the front end.

well if i don't have to lossen the bottom clams the forks should stay pretty much where they are. How would you re-align them if required? if the axle stays on etc should they not stay pretty straight?
Now that i think about it, i lowered my front forks a bit and at that time i did nothing special other then tighten them up afterwards, so if they are not straight how would i know?

As long as the tubes are the same, left/right in the tree and not in a bind, properly torqued the same, what alignment issue can there be? 'Cause I wanta know.

I only know from taking them off completely, so you may be fine, but with the top bolts loose, compress the forks (push down on the bars) a few times to make sure they don't bind.
