I have an 05 America which I plan to relocate the controls to a more standard position, so, I can lose bar for the forward controls. This got me thinking that I would then have enough clearance to install Bonnie or Thrux header pipes which would allow me to run the pipes closer to the frame in general. I realize I may need to fab new brackets further back and likely new hangers for the pipes themselves, but my primary question is whether or not the America/Speedy down-tubes are close enough together to allow use of the Bonnie headers to begin with??

Is the angle that the Bonneville pipes leave the head actually different? They use the same head, so I don't see why you couldn't use them unless they come out forward more instead of off to the sides, but the Bonnies have two down tubes also so I think they should fit just fine.

They look to come out at the same angle as our headers do, plus with that same ugly oil cooler, it looks like the down tubes are the same distance apart.

Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Yep Kurt, I agree with Dave here. I also can't see a reason why the standard Bonnie's exhaust wouldn't work on a BA.

And re the relocation of your foot controls...Do you have an idea as to how to accomplish this? Ya see, I did this to my '02 BA about a year ago and I love it. No more sittin' on my tailbone for me anymore.

If you have any questions about doing this I'll be happy to give you my input as to how I went about doing this.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

That is the entire reason.. I find myself riding my KZ much more because I can't fix my wretched back.

For some reason the Bonnie pipes always appear more narrow at the top bend than ours. I realize the double wall makes ours bigger, but maybe it is just an illusion. It's apparent they taper back closer to the frame, which is what I think I want in order to put the pegs where I'd like.

The look I would really like is a 2-1 down the left side of the bike, but I am not going to buy one and just hope it works out.

As far as the pegs go.
My first thought was to find some Scrambler sets and adapt the whole unit, but finding them has been impossible. SO, I guess I am open to suggestions on exactly how. Currently, considering buying some Busa or GSXR rearsets to use as a start point.

It may not make a difference but although the heads are same dimensions our engines are offset to one side in the frame to allow for the wider tyre.

I'd ask Hutchjr7. I'm assuming he used Scrambler pipes or some such, but he has them on one side. just a thought.

So I bought a set of Tec -2-1 pipes for Bonne/Thrux & went to work. Some notes:
1] Stock Bonnie head pipes would probably fit okay - These were more work.
2] The down tubes on the AM/SM are a little wider than the Bonnie. Adding the tabs for the forward controls, this 2-1 pipe had to fit a little wider than it was designed. As a result, the position where they are lined up to accept the collector changes. I had to cut 1/2 off the end of the right pipe so they would be in alignment at the collector.
3] I also had to put a slight indentation in the right pipe to clear the edge of the engine. Not doing this would have required the collector be aligned at a slight downward angle, and I wanted it straight.
4] The bracket for the collector lines up at the end of the down tube, so it is not difficult to fabricate a clamp and attach it to the frame rail.
5] Rear bracket mount is about 4" behind and slightly above the AM/SM stock bracket. I fabbed an aluminum bar mounting it to where the factory foot peg plates originally mounted.
6] It was more work than I expected. It looks better than the picture below shows it to. I'll post more (better) pics this week of the brackets.
7] Now to create some mid-pegs and controls so I can ride it.

Dwight, Could you please show me a picture of your bike, both sides. I would like to see what you did with relocating your footpegs. I'm very interested in putting mine in the middle and I heard you did something like that.

I like it but I would want to keep the forward controls.

See the thread I started working out the peg relo. Just put up a half-arsed pic of myself that shows the pipes.
