hey fellas i'm doing some major engine work and am thinking of painting my motor. what color should the 994 be?

i'd leave the engine casings as is. i was also thinking the raw edges on the fins too.

here's with raw fins. for the two who like as is. do you mean leave the block gray?

I like the black crankcase with black valve box & cylinders the best....gives it an old skool look. I'd leave the chrome covers as is but blackout the headers & pipes.

Either top left or bottom left of your pics. But I like Ian's idea. Red jugs would look cool.

Personally, I think it would look just lovely painted all in chartreuse.



(...which btw is a word that seems to have a superfluous "e" in it...but then again, that's just another one of those French words where they throw ALL sorts of needless vowels into 'em, and of course from where the Brits picked up that habit!)

Okay Brin, and now for my REAL suggestion here:

I agree with Ade about the engine cases...black-out everything, including those. And then, as has been suggested here, file the outside edges of the fins.

I would suggest a stone, way over a file to dress the edges of your fins. A fine grit, flat oilstone will remove very little metal, you work on 3-5 fins at time, keeping the bright raw aluminum square and uniform. The stone will plug up quick (as Aluminum is soft), so flush it clean with a little shot of spray solvent. I do my two Spdy s this way every thorough cleaning and get great results. When needed I deglaze my rotors with a rock as well, jack the bike up, hold a dry clean stone to the working portion of my rotor, spin the tire 3-4 full revolutions, doing both sides, front and back. This method will also highlight rotor defects and warpage if present.

thanks for the input. i'm still a bit undecided. i'm leaning heavily on a either all black with brushed aluminum casings or original. i thought i'd like the fins shaved but all black looks so damn mean. but i do like how the grey makes gives more of an old school feel.

All black with the exception of that classic badge on the tank...keep that sparkling shiny!

eff yeah! hell, just get all the thruxton stuff you can and it'll be (more) gorgeous.
