What do you use to quiet the "inital" start up [warming up mode]rattles of the lifters. They quiet down. but i would like to stop most of the noise.Solid lifter cams do this.
Do you have a favorite additive for your BA bob s

Settle down Bob, these bikes don't even have lifters since they are overhead cam... what are you talking about? Are you talking about valve noise? They just have it, and you're not going to be rid of it by putting some oil additive in it. Be grateful you don't have a Ducati.

Rattle is good quiet is bad as a general rule. The tappets and shim over bucket configuration make the noise. Generally louder when hot.

It is not broken and has to be that way. If real loud it may need to be adjusted (shimmed). Probably not. There are no additives that help. Heavier oil may but probably is a bad idea just to lessen the tic, tic, tic.

I asked exactly the same question 6 years ago and got exactly the same answer Some things never change

Bob,

Check your valve clearances. If they are within spec then the noise you are hearing is probably normal and cannot really be improved upon unless you set clearances to the minimum.

I remember a few years ago when a fellow had louder than normal valve noise... He finally tracked it down to the cam anti backlash gear tensioner springs(not the chain tensioner). He replaced them and the noise was reduced dramatically.
