It's probably my own fault. The battery on my bike died yesterday evening and I had to bump start it. I completely forgot the big hill that I had to get up to get back to the road, and I tried to balance keeping the revs high enough to maintain a spark with fluttering the clutch to get up the hill. The hill was only a few hundred yards long, but when I got to the top, I completely lost power in any gear. My first inclination as that I've burned out my clutch shoes. Has anybody had any experience with that?

Once the battery is toast, it's hard to keep the bike running. The clutch is probably fine, replace the battery and report back.

The battery is fine, it was dead at the time, but the bike was running. What happened was that I had to bump start it, then a gang came at us after smashing some windows out of cars. Not a good scene. My girl flipped out and I had to keep the bike at high revs to keep the spark, while fluttering the clutch to get up a HUGE hill. When I got to the top of the hill the bike stopped transmitting power. It ran, but there was no transmission of power whatsoever to the drive train. I had to hitchhike to where there was phone reception and then get it towed home. It's either the clutch or the transmission.

Sounds like the transmission then. The first thing you need to replace is your zip code. Yours sounds like a dangerous place. After that, take the bike in to the shop.

Again - How many miles are on your Triumph? Unless you have a lot of miles, and I mean a LOT, I'm guessing it may be nothing more than a clutch cable adjustment needed.

It revs in gear but won't go?

The clutches run in oil so can take a lot of abuse. But it can still be damaged and may have been. If you don't know how to tell by feel, it's really hard to explain. You may need to take it to a shop but my guess from your description of what happened is that the clutch got fried.

It took a lot for me to roach my original clutch, after the 904. I felt it slipping for about a year before I actually did anything, and my clutch plates were scorched pretty nasty black. But all I had to do was use less throttle, it never had a complete loss of power transfer. I don't see how a bump start would cause any damage, done it myself a few times.

In his story he tells of slipping the clutch all the way up a huge hill to keep the engine running.

Yes, I had to slip the clutch up the hill, and it was a huge hill, to keep the engine running. It started to lose power transfer right at the top of the hill and then stopped transferring power altogether. This process took less then 1 minute from the time it was transmitting power to a complete loss of power.

Blackwind: Yes, it revs in gear and will not go. There is what appears to be a jingling or rattling sound coming from the clutch case when it is pushed forward or backward in gear.

I have VERY VERY BASIC mechanic skills and basic hand tools. Would I be able to do this repair myself? I read somewhere all I would need really is a torque wrench. Has anyone rebuilt their own clutch?

Super easy, change out, your oil is no doubt contaminated with whats left of your clutch plates as well. I would invest in a magnetic oil drain plug too? Order your side case gasket now (BikeBandit), Fasteddy for new springs and plates and you will benefit greatly from buying a manual (Haynes or Factory) as well. This is job you can do yourself and save a lot of money in the process.

I respectfully suggest you pay a pro to do it this time, & continue to build your skills with things like oil changes, chain adjustment, & plug changes first.

It's easy for Ryk. Maybe not so much for you, at this point.

+1, not a first project to try and tackle. I had mine open the other day, and almost didn't notice the starter gear had moved out of position. Had I put the cover back on, it could have been catastrophic. All turned out well though, and my leaky breather tube got fixed. Lots of work to replace a single O-ring.
