My standard longhair dachshund heard a noise about 3:30 this morning and so we let him out and within a minute or two, the smell hit us!! Oh my God!! I've smelled it before as I work with dogs on a daily basis, but when it's sprayed in your own backyard and the windows are wide open... So I got my deskunk solution mixed and he got into the bath at 4 a.m. Then again twice more as it's on his face and head and needed to be scrubbed. He still smells a bit but he's a lot better. Had to buy a new collar too. What a day!

Not good... sure puts you to the test, doesn't it? I remember a time when my dog got porcupined... also, not good!

Fabreeze air effects does wonders for skunk stink. Just spray it on, don't rub it in.

The solution: Mix in an open container, 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda and a few drops of liquid soap, Ivory or soft soap works well.
Work into the skin and let sit long enough to get rid of the stink. Be very careful around the eyes as it'll really sting if it runs in their eyes. The vets carry an ointment they put into dogs eyes when they're under anesthesia you can buy, very cheap, to put in the eyes to protect them. I got some for him yesterday and it worked well as he'd been sprayed in the face.
He smells like "rose water" today!!!

Yeah, I've had the best luck with baking soda and mild soap. The tomato juice thing never worked for me (my dog, either).

no,no, the tomato juice is to be mixed with vodka and a shot of tobasco, you'll need a couple of drinks for this job

They're not little. He's a Standard Dachshund. 4'3" long, 14" tall at the shoulders and 52#'s. His feet are the size of the palm of my hand. But he's sure got the dachshund protection thing going on. She's about 38#'s and much more petite. But still quite large even for the standard size.
I coulda used the tomato juice and vodka yesterday morning.

thats happened to my mutt twice , skunk is the worst odour in the world ,when its in your house and everything in it for weeks an weeks (burnt tyres n garlic ,what a nightmare) . your peroxide mix is the only thing that works well . tomato juice doesnt work .head and shoulders shampoo works a bit, till you get that mix happenin. our dog absolutely hates water now, soon as you touch the garden hose or even say the word water hes off

I had no idea they got that big. I've only seen the little "wiener dogs".

My friend has a Sheltie. I hate that dog as it barks at everything. And I mean everything, if you move your hand, take a breath, blink your eyes it barks. Annoying as hell. She’ll yell at the dog, still barks, threaten it, it still barks, only one thing will shut this mutt’s yapper. She looks at it and says “ you want a bath”. That does it! The dog will immediately look for a corner, lay it’s head down and SHUT UP. Did I mention I hate that dog !
