"The Joy of Motorcycle Riding" Shalom Auslander
I love motorcycles, and I love riding. Like many of you what first drew me to bikes was not just the experience of riding, but the feeling that I'd become part of a special community - a brotherhood, really.
Nothing calms me more than a long ride down the interstate, waving to the members of my beloved clan. Except when I pass Harley guys. I hate Harley guys. Hate, hate, hate. When they pass me on the highway, you know what I do? I don't wave. With their little tassel handlebars and the studded luggage and the half helmets - God, they drive me crazy.
You know who else I hate? BMW guys. Oh, do I hate those guys. I don't wave at them either. They think they're so great, sitting all upright, with their 180 degree German engines. God, I hate them. They're almost as bad as those old codgers on their touring motorcycles. You know what I call those bikes? "Two wheeled couches!" Get it? Because they're so big. They drive around like they have got all day. Appreciate the scenery somewhere else, Grandpa, and while your at it, I'm not waving to you.
Ducati guys - I don't wave at them either. Why they don't spend a little more money on their bikes? "You can have it in any color as long as it is red." Aren't you cool! Like they even know what a Desmo-whatever engine is, anyway. Try finding the battery, you Italian-wannabe racers! I never, ever wave at those guys.
Suzuki guys aren't much better, which is why I never wave at them, either. They always have those stupid helmets sitting on the top of their stupid heads, and God forbid they should ever wear any safety gear. They make me so mad. Sometimes they'll speed by and look over at me and you know what I do? I don't wave I just keep going.
Please, don't get me started on Kawasaki guys. Ninjas? What are you, twelve years old? Team Green my ******. I never wave at Kawasaki guys.
I ride a Honda, and I'll only wave at Honda guys, but even then, I'll never wave at a guy in full leathers. Never, never, never. Yeah like you're going to get your knee down on the New York Thruway. Nice crotch, by the way. Guys in full leathers will never get a wave from me, and by the way, neither will the guys in two piece leathers. And I'll tell you who else I'm not waving at - those guys with the helmets with loud paint jobs. Four pounds of paint on a two pound helmet - like I'm going to wave back at that! I'll also never wave at someone with a mirrored visor. Or helmet stickers. Or racing gloves. Or hiking boots.
To me, motorcycling is like a family, a close knit brotherhood of people who ride Hondas, wear jeans and a leather jacket (not Vanson) with regular gloves and a solid color helmet with a clear visor, no stickers, no racing gloves and regular boots (not Timberlands). And isn't that what really makes riding so special?

I have read this a few times on other forums and I always have time to read it once more time. I never posted it here as I thought I might get into big trouble with the man

Yep, seen it before...still funny. Only ones I don't wave to are scooters. There's just something distasteful about those things. I'm a Rocker, not a Mod.

I wave at everybody (except scooters amd mopeds). Although I rarely got a wave or nod back from people riding Organ Donors, usually wearing one piece leathers, and mirrored visors.

I do try to wave at everyone. If I am hauling anyone pilon, I instruct them to wave as well. Howver, that was one of the funniest things I read in a while. I do know a couple people with very similar attitudes (makes it even funnier).

Have never seen that before, either. I will be good to remember when I get tired of waving when the bikes are out in force. The donor bike group do not usually expect a wave from anyone but another of their own around here, so I usually oblige with no wave. In Ca. in the 70's and 80's, we usually waved with an upright closed fist. In NJ now it is more like a low five. What is your sign? TR

Doesnt that just tick you off. Never fails. There was one incident where a Triump rider waved at me. So I turned around and chased him down. Took twenty miles before the git stopped. I think he thought i was storking him or something.

First nice day here in New Hampshire, in some time rode about 25 miles round trip to the dealer bit chilly but sunny I saw soooo many bikes out most in heavy winter attire but my left arm still aches from all the waving...and all those frozen little faces, with the "first ride of the season smile" it must have been 3 hours before my cheeks thawed out (but the smile is still there)

Curious? What in the world are ya suppose to do when it seems like a thousand bikes are passing you? Do you hold your hand out till they all pass or just pick and choose the ones ya wanna wave at. This has been weighing heavy on my heart. Somebody please help me!

Heck! I'll go ya one better. I DO the wave!!! The only problem is my fellow riders seem to wonder why I'm all of a sudden standing up on my footpegs as we pass each other. I'm starting to think that the effect just ain't quite the same without me riding with a few thousand other guys and doin' this thing in unison!!! Cheers, Dwight (that reminds me....when does baseball season start)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Read online here in the past that the V wave stands for VTwin. Well, I turn my hand around and raise the first and pinkie finger to represent Parallel Twins!!! (Just kidding of course).

For those about to die, I salute you. Left-handed salute that is. PD and FD (cars, trucks and bikes) get one also. I can't hold it waiting for a return though, gets too dangerous.

I wave at everybody on 2 wheels, I dont care what they ride or wear. For guys on bikes I usually yell "YOU'D GET THERE FASTER IF YOU HAD A MOTOR" after I wave.

Good one, Soren!
But NOW these guys have ME wonderin'...If when two Honda V-five GP riders cross paths, would they have to do that Vulcan "Live-Long-And-Prosper" thing with their off-hand TOO???
Cheers, Dwight (Hey...I wonder if Leonard Nimoy could ride for "Big Red"?!!)

Shoot, I wave at every two wheeler when it's safe. I'm like Forrest Gump seeing Lt. Dan for the first time in years! I also use the parallel twin finger wave (finger wave!!!, where's my proctologist?) No, the index finger and middle finger stuck together is what I mean by that. And if they don't wave, I know that they "just don't get it" - probably a poser. Wave Safe, Dennis
