I had my 2005 Speedmaster in for a 12,000 mile service. Not at a dealer, but a shop that I've used before and has been recommended by others. When I got the bike back (after three and a half weeks, grrr), it seems to have a lot of noise from the top of the engine. Is this to be expected with the reshimmed valves? The mechanic said things went together smoothly. He said he put it in top gear and spun the back tire and everything worked smoothly. The bike runs great and has plenty of power. Its just really noisy. Now, it was somewhat noisy before and I know these guys do sound like sewing machines, but this seems excessive. Some video and sound on youtube: Video of my noisy Speedmaster

Id say normal with OE pipes. Did your mech give you the before and after measurements of the valve shims? Did you make sure he knew what the specs were for the clearances?
I didnt do mine till almost 24k miles and I barely needed to do anything. I cant speak to the valve noise when it was done cause my pipes are "robust".

That is normal. The racket is good. If lots of power you are hurting nothing. Quiet is a little scary on our bikes.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

OK, thanks. I know quite is bad, but this is louder than I was expecting.
No, no specs for before and after. The pipes are stock, but with the last pair of baffles removed.

Might be the cam anti-backlash gear. If the mech allowed this to be released when changing the shims, the top end sound is very different and loud. C-Ya, Charlie

#1, It's a hassle to take a look, but if the anti backlash gear springs aren't set up properly, I forecast trouble in your motors future. Heck, just ask your mechanic, if he pinned the spring loaded cam backlash segments, when he removed and replaced the cams, if he is sure he did, your good. If he isn't sure, he should be taking a look under the cover.
