So, I'm a candidate for a job in San Francisco... so if I get it, which at this point it looks very likely, I'd have to relocate there from Atlanta.

I've been to Santa Maria, Santa Barbara and briefly in L.A. before but never in San Francisco. I'll probably (or for what I've seen at least) end up in an apartment with no garage and here start my questions.

I'm not sure if I should sell my '07 America or not. I'd hate to leave it out in the open, I'll also have my car and space is very limited over there. Will it be worth selling it and then later on buy another bike? or should I just keep it since it is paid for? Argh, I just don't know. Any thoughts? about this or about relocation in general?

Yeah Angel, here's MY thought:
Make OODLES of money, 'cause THAT beautiful city(and perhaps THE most beautiful city in these here United States), isn't cheap to live in...but you probably already kinda know that, huh.

Okay, here's my other thought:
Keep the bike, 'cause I'll bet you'll be able to find someplace on the grounds of the apartment where you can park it so that it's off the street, maybe in some little alcove out back of the place. Ya see, I wouldn't sell your bike until you find out that this wouldn't be an option 'cause the San Francisco/Northern California area is a GREAT place to ride motorcycles, and pretty much all year 'round!

(...good luck!)

keep it, find a storage unit close by big enough for the bike and maybe your car. Park the car on the street, drive to the storage unit, ride the bike everywhere!

Can I have your job in ATL?
I'm ready to get back to the SE!

I'd say it must be a pretty good job...San Fransisco??

I am in the military so "get to" move every three years. the bike won't take much room in a moving truck if this is a consideration. My thought is until you know where you will be living, definitely don't sell the bike. There may be apartments with covered parking or even a garage. It seems like a bike would be a good option in San Fran as well. But I don't know first hand. By the grace of God I have never had to visit or let alone live there - let's see what consternation I can inflame with that comment!

I was going to write/suggest that if you move to San Francisco,
1. Slap the ex Speaker.
2. don't ever bend over in public.

But I changed my mind.

Moe, well said!

Don't sell the bike...there's some of the best riding in Northern California. Hwy, 1 and 101, redwoods, etc...Come up to Washington on Hwy 97 and say hi!

Welcome to the west coast!

(...well Jim, IF Angel here DOES happen to ever get a good slap in at that ex-Speaker, I HOPE you KNOW that at least SHE probably wouldn't CRY like the PRESENT ONE seems to do at the drop of a hat!!!)

Don't sell, especially if it is paid for. The first 5 years I had my TBA I lived in an apartment. Get a good disc lock and a cover if you have to park it outside. Like Dwight said, there's some great riding up North and even to the south of SF.

San Francisco is awesome. If I was ever forced to live in a major city again it would absolutely be my first choice. SF and points north are, IMHO, the only part of California worth keeping out of the ocean (and I had a beach house in San Diego once).

San Francisco is beautiful, great restaurants, fascinating history, rich culturally. I found the people to be incredibly helpful and friendly, especially compared to cities in the eastern US. If I was looking at a map someone would invariably stop and offer assistance. I had friends from college that worked there when I was in the service and I'd catch hops out to NAS Alameda whenever I could.

Just out of curiosity, in your opinion, what's not to like about San Francisco?

Are the lights still on in California? San Fran?, don't drop the soap, if you do, don't pick it up.

I wonder if the same comments would have come up if it was Houston being discussed?

It's not Houston but nearby in Galveston, a very good friend came 'out' recently. I had already figured it out because his 'partner' had died and I saw the death notices. It was kinda funny because we had a reunion and 'Joe' had decided to share his situation with his old friends. The reaction was basically, "OK, that's great. Would you hand me that bottle of mustard?"

It was so anti climactic for him we all basically laughed our a$$e$ off about it. I was pretty proud of my friends.

No! But Houston is the number one destination city to live in.

Detroit was at one time America's richest city, but not anymore. It's sad, I lost a link of a drone's tour of Detroit, all the great old neighborhoods and public buildings falling apart. Nothing last forever.

But, yes Houston is Forbes #1 coolest city in America. Simple: Econ 101

The "Best" place to live is very subjective and differs greatly between individuals.. Some people love the big city, some love living in the woods, and others somewhere in between. I personally would need a frontal lobotomy to endure living San Fran (or Houston, or NY, etc...). But regardless of where you choose to live, you can always escape it for a while by jumping on the bike and taking a nice cruise. Don't get rid of the bike, you will most likely regret it.

Cheers,
Brad

SF is hands down my favorite city in the US and I've been to most big cities in every state. You'll find it quite an upgrade from Atlanta and you'll really want the bike there. Really. Keep the bike.

Regarding my aversion to San Fran, it certainly has nothing to do with the beauty of the area. In fact, that is what makes it all the more unfortunate.

The Happy Meal Banners and Their Ilk

This article is just one of a 100,000 examples that could be provided to highlight the thinking and values of way too many in that area. And as San Fransisco seems to be the Mecca of "progressive" thought, thus the close mindedness on my part to it!

Well HELL Carl, THAT'S no freakin' reason to not even VISIT the place, dude!

I mean, I, myself, have visited some real BACKWARD freakin' places were I think there's WAY too many freakin' retrograde thinkin' morons, like say in the freakin' BIBLE BELT...BUT I gotta say, once I got to places like that, at least I COULD SEE some of the BEAUTY in the surrounding areas and could even ENJOY bein' there for at least a LITTLE while!!!!

I mean HELL(again)! I now even LIVE in a freakin' state that seems to have an overabundance of those retrograde thinkin' types...ARIZONA! BUT, the sheer freakin' BEAUTY of SEDONA makes all that reasonably acceptable to me now!!!

Yep, like I said ABOVE..."Expand your HORIZONS a little", DUDE!

(...okay, now I CAN'T wait to see if I've "incited" Carl enough to respond BACK!!!)

Good point, and I had best visit soon too, the state is in how much debt now? And also while the lights are still on!

Wow, thanks everyone for all the comments and suggestions, even the don't drop the soap ones, I'm fully aware of that my kickboxing training would come in handy methinks.

Anyway, yeah, I know it is expensive to live there but it is my second chance at getting my dream job and I don't want to miss it and then regret it for the rest of my life, which imho would be worse.

I really appreciate the insight so keep 'em coming. Any info on what to expect etc is very welcomed.

Yep, very good point there, Carl!

Yep, ya better make that trip out there SOON alright!

'Cause as you probably know, EITHER those lights WILL go out OR that "Sodom and Gomorrah" is SURE to fall into the Pacific once the San Andreas Fault gives way for good!

(...and of course it's an even bet WHICH of those two things will happen FIRST!!!)

So, you subscribe to National Review, WFB would have been happy. But, I'm not sure the article's argument, that social, consumer and free market pressure works better, than San Francisco's system of state coercion, is antithetical to a country's supposed claim to be a free one.

In most states, lane splitting is only illegal if a LEO sees you do it.

No, I lane split on the america, but not as much. I think it's just the visual from the cockpit, clip-ons and being over the tank. Sort of like feeling slim in horizontal stripes.

Visited SF for the first time this past February. Loved it. Local and state politics aside, cool town & cool people. Don't know that I could afford to live anywhere near the city in the same fashion I'm used to but I will visit again. As far as your question, keep the bike. Don't miss out on the northern CA riding scene. And for what it's worth I saw a lot of Triumphs parked on the steet out there.
