Why do they keep animals when they have no intentions to care for them. I hit a dog today on my ride to work, felt like it broke my foot, but I'm fine. I didn't even go down. I hit the dog in the head with my right foot control.

Hope you are ok, I was following a bud who did the same thing. Knocked a hole in the dogs head and we watched as blood poured out and the dog struggled to his death.
To some, dogs are ar real cute as puppies but they dont have time to care for them once grown.

Well ya know Chad, I've always said a vigorously enforced spay and neuter policy would probably make instances such as this far less likely to occur.

And nope, I WASN'T talkin' about just the pets here...I was talkin' about some of the freakin' PET OWNERS out there TOO!!!

(...btw, glad you're okay)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I agree with you Chad. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I sure hope you're foot isn't too bruised.

I've been in the dog business for almost 20 yrs and spaying and neutering is the best way to avoid some of those problems and like Dwight said, I'm not just talking about the dogs.

As most of you know to me my dogs are family and it would eat me up inside weather it was my fault or not. Sorry you had to have it happen. I have 3 pitbulls and 2 run loose all the time and stay in my back yard. One has to always be on a leash or chain. He wouldn't just run out in the road or chase a car or bike and will listen if I say no in those cases but he will chase small animals and won't listen if I say no so I can't let him loose. It would kill me if something happened to any of them due to something I could prevent.

I hate that the dog probably died from the head injury. If the owner had kept him put up or taught him better it wouldn't have happened.
There is another place on that same road I expect to see two dogs that are not kept care of properly, but I have been morking on them teaching them not to chase my bike. This one took me by total surprise.

About a month ago I was riding the KLR up a narrow gravel road when a Great Dane came charging after me. He was coming from behind so no problem. About a half hour later I was coming back down and that big 'ol sucker was standing right in the middle of the road waiting on me. Had to play a little chicken with him but nobody got hurt.

Ya see there is an irresposible owner, the dog obviously won't stay away from the road so the dogs should be prevented from doing so by restraint of some kind for the dogs own protection. It's funny but what worries me most about being broken into is that they would let my dogs loose and they could get hurt. Especially Porkchop who is the one that won't stay in the back yard. Good chance they would stop before then though because 110lb Porkchop would be bouncing off the front door barking at them.

Don't you just wish we could read dogs' minds, that Great Dane was probably thinking, "Jesus! that guy on the KLR had some balls, best time I've had since before I got fixed."

Dogs often find ways to escape captivity. Mine have done so occasionally. I often see people walking around with leashes in their hands trying to find their wandering dogs. Let's face it, many dogs hate constant confinement as much as we would. Until cars became ubiquitous dogs were routinely allowed to run free, I don't think they gotten the memo that it's not allowed anymore.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Yeah yeah, Larry. BUT, you're STILL with some of us here that SOME pet owners should be spayed and neutered TOO...RIGHT???!!!

(...I mean, JUST for the record here, ya understand)

I agree Larry but in Porkchops case it is to protect him from harm.Mostly from cars but also from someone who may be afraid of a 110lb pitbull from lack of dog experience or one bad experience. He is big clumsy and playful and some might mistake it for agression and hurt him. The only thing he might do is lick you to death. He does that so often it is very annoying. I could see the caption under his picture "I love everyone.....and you're next"My 5 year old grand son rides him like a bronco he even holds the collar with the other hand up in the air, cracks me up.He is very protective of them he even pushes in to make sure the twins are OK if I am tickling them.Funny thing is when he is barking and bouncing off the front door it is only because he wants to say hello and play.

IMHO there is no such thing as a "bad" dogs, just BAD dog owners. Domesticated breeds still have an innate need for an Alpha/pack leader to follow. But too many dog owners don't understand this & failing that responsibility to their pet & leave their dog to fend for themselves daily!

Whether at play, just curiosity, or out of fear, all animals have a signle basic instinct to "fight or flee". Any dog uncontrolled /un-trained by the influences of an Alpha /leader will often unwittingly create hazardous circumstances for the populace and for the dog itself.

I fully agree that SOME pet owners should be spayed and neutered TOO! But I fear that would hardly be an effective deterrant for willing stupidity on the part of the pet owner. Stupid folks are born every day regardless.

It is sad and unfortunate that the dog you hit was likely mortally injured, but I am glad that you suffered only minor injury as a result Chad! I hope you are mending well too.
