Just a quick note to anyone posting pics of their brand new pride and joy.......

There are scrotes out there who are not beyond 'cloning' your reg plate when they see a similar bike/car, leaving you with a constant stream of parking tickets and speeding fines.

There are also those who browse car/bike forums looking for nice shiny new vehicles, and gleaning info about the owner and their location, with a view to nicking the vehicle (after pinching the reg number of someone else's similar bike/car from another forum )

For these reasons, it might be an idea to blur or block out the reg number of your own bike in any pics, and that of other members bikes as well.

Sad to have to take these precautions, but as a group we have some very nice (and very expensive) toys out there and that's where they should stay...not with some low life.

Just a thought

Jan

Good thinking! I followed your advice. Thanks!

Yes, you are right. I refuse to be paranoid, but nothing wrong with being cautious. I have noticed that on most television shows they block out the licence plate numbers.

License plates are a form of identification. With someone's plate number, I can have a friend of mine with access find you very easily.

Thanks Speedy. What's next? People following you to get your license number? Since our bikes don't vibrate that much we may have to attach a vibrator to our plate so they can't be read.

It's an increasing problem
You very often see car carriers with tape over the plates when taking cars away.

Don't believe it? You're lucky. "Cloning" is getting to be a major problem here in UK as the ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras that have recently come into use over here were doing such a good job of catching untaxed or uninsured vehicles. Go past the camera - you get pulled up by the cops 1/2 mile up the road. Much easier to clone a plate so the computer doesn't pick you up. There are numerous cases of people getting speeding tickets when they were miles away from the alleged incident. One bloke in last week's MCN got off a speed ticket because he could produce evidence that the bike photographed by a speed camera, although the same make and model as his, had different mirrors and paint to the "original".

So just don't give some POS the chance....

I believe Phil is spot on about the reason for blocking out the license plate in photos. If you post a picture with your plate number, I can get lots of sensitive information about you that you might not want people to know, like your home address, driving history and much more. I would imagine that if someone wanted to dupe my tag, it would be much easier to just write it down as I drive past them than to wait for me to post a picture on the net But regardless of the reason, it's still a good idea to blank out or otherwise obscure the plate in photos, particularly those you are going to put out on the net for the whole world to see.

Cheers,
Brad

I'm all for being cautious, but at the same time, some dude could see me parked at the gas station, or on the road, and clone me then too...

Th point is that if a guy has a red speedmaster and wants to dupe the plates on a red speedmaster he'll get on the web and find a pick of one much easier than driving around and checking all the local gas stations. I imagine this is a larger problem in countries such as Britain that allow bike owners to make their own plates (or at least have them made). In the states only the states can create plates.

I can probably find the majority of this place in the court system. Or people search or white pages (if you have access).

I am more worried about crap showing up on my Visa card. I must have had to scream at 4 companies this year (2006) for unauthorized charges.
