How long of a time do you have? To Sturgis and the Grand Canyon and back to Michigan must be around 2,500 to 3,000 miles.

Grand Canyon is a nice ride. I'm partial to the North Rim myself, but all the tourists go to the South Rim. Nice lodge right on the edge of the North Rim. If you want to stay there, better try to make reservations right away. My wife and I stayed there for 4 days on our 10th anniversary. Real peaceful, and they have a good restaurant inside the lodge with not too bad prices.

Two bikes or are you riding two up? Either way, I am jealous...

I am going to have to make plans to go to Sturgis in a year or so. My sister lives in Rapid City and my brother lives a few miles down rhe road from Sturgis at Piedmont just off I-90 up in the hills. He has yearly tenants from somewhere back east who bunk in his basement. Not keen on riding all the way though....a trailer would be in order.

All this trailor talk, am I on the right site? did you guys go out and buy hardleys last night? get on your bike and use it like it was ment to be, for long periods and long distances. I think my old man(he's 65 and owns a hardley) is planning on riding up from the melbourne fl. area and then going on to sturgis with me this year. he isnt sure but he might have a friend ride it up here and then we would ride from here the rest of the way. Still ironing it all out but hope it works, love riding with him.

That's what I thought when I saw Sturgis, I thought I was on the HOG site. Jillions of people on Harley's or any bike does not really appeal to me. I wouldn't mind riding up there in the off season though.

Its strictly a comfort thing. I am not afraid to admit I'd prefer trailering a trip from Southern Az to Sturgis Souh Dakota. Saves wear and tear on my butt. Personally I just feel that our bikes are for cruising short distances that entail short hops of not more than two to three hundred miles ,commuting ,and for weekend fun but not ideally suited to long distance touring. I do have full respect for those who do use them that way. I am simply not a member of the Iron butt motorcycle club at this time.
On the other hand if I had plenty of time to take off work and I only wanted to go about 350 miles a day to save my aching butt and enjoy the trip I would have no probs riding all the way ...one up.

I'm with you guys!! I avoid the Laughlin River Run for the same reason, and it's only a little over 100 miles away. Not my cup o' tea.

Just a theory, but I think the reason the sentiment here seems to be against going to most any large gathering of motorcyclists is that it comes with the breed.
One of the major reasons we've all bought Triumphs in the first place is that we tend to be people who are, as the slogan on my old Triumph T-shirt said..."A Breed Apart". And so going to any function that involves a like-minded group, just doesn't appeal to most of us. And, we tend to know that getting anywhere on a capable and fun to ride machine is really where it's all at, anyway.
Cheers, Dwight (I mean, how many other brands have had for years a model named the "Tiger"?..a solitary animal if ever there was)

Well, regardless of breed sentiment like minded groups it you get to the Black Hills of South Dakota during the warm months rally or not you will enjoy the trip and your rides around the hills.
Lots of fine well maintained two lane twisties from Spearfish Canyon in the southern hills and all the way up to Custer state park and the Northern hills. Deadwood is a neat little town to visit (it was resurrected when gambling became legal in Sodak.) Plenty of bars and restaurants, lakes , places to camp, Mt Rushmore for those who have never seen it.....

Speaking of trailoring, the wife, AmyLee and I just signed on the dotted line for a 19 foot toy hauler this last weekend. At this point I'm still planning to ride all the way to Sturgis along with a Harley rider (fellow Sons of Thunder member)and AmyLee will bring her TBA in the hauler. But, if the wife wants to ride in route we will switch to share the riding and hauling. Mount Rushmore/Hill City KOA here we come. Bob

Exactly my point, Kevin. The ride going there IS absolutely beautiful! But once you arrive to that mass of humanity, it's a COMPLETELY different "animal".
I guess I'm just not that into the "facinating" world of custom painted Harleys...Harleys...Harleys....oh, and did I mention...HARLEYS?!
Now don't get me wrong. I like the Motor Company's products. I'm just not that impressed with that many of their riders. (MANY, being the operative word here)
Cheers, Dwight

I am making tentative plans to go to Johnstown Pa. this year for Thunder in the Valley. Only about 350 miles one way. One member described it as too big and too Harley. Well, I will try it and if I don't like it, there are plenty of nice roads that leave there that are less traveled. TR

Sturgis is NOT why you go out there, it is the country. There are a lot of beautiful rides. Everytime I go to Sturgis itself we are only ever in the town for a few hours. A few hours in an entire week ... 2005 we went the last weekend and stayed the following week. Still quite a few bikes around. The week of the rally is an experience if you have never done it. There is like a 200 square mile area that is nothing but people having a good time. I mean I have been out there and where I have not even entered Sturgis itself.
