One of my favorite actors all time.....I grew up wanting to be Opie. Sheriff Taylor will be sorely missed.

He is probably best known by most from is TV series, comedies and dramas, and his long professional relationship with Don Knotts. But, the man was a serious actor, if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor, get a hold of a copy of "A Face In The Crowd" (1957). Just an all around talent. Actor, musician, story teller. Could play the straight guy or the bumbler. Early in the Andy Griffith Show Sherriff Taylor was the corn pone funny clown prince but as the show progressed Andy realized he had a great cast of characters to feed off and he changed his role to the straight man.
One of the best stories I recall from my childhood was listening to Andy’s “ What It Was, Was Football”

One of my favorite old shows was Mayberry RFD. Andy and Barney sure got in a lot of jams. A few years back there was a Mayberry restaraunt here with lots of memorabilia. And who can forget Matlock. He had quite a career. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Griffith

As MACMC said, Andy was 'discovered' in the role of Lonesome Rhodes in the film "A Face In the Crowd". It not only is an American classic but it displays just how great a talent he was. The Library of Congress has preserved the film as 'culturally significant'. If you have never seen the film do yourself a favor and watch it.

Andy Griffith was a matchless talent, and will be long remembered by many for his gift of humor tempered by sincerity.
Funny, you never know how much impact a person can have on one's life. Just this morning I was sipping my coffee and watching Mayberry and laughing over the fix the Opie had got himself in over a date to a party. Golly, that show was truely a gem, and it was Mr. Griffith and the other players that made is seem so real.

Couldn't agree more about the classic film "A Face in the Crowd" and Andy Griffith's excellent portrayal of the loathsome "Lonesome" Rhodes. I remember a few decades back and the first time I watched that movie and thinking at the time what a departure it was from how the public has come to think of him.
Quite a talent he was indeed.

Somewhere out in the ether there's a copy of The Danny Thomas show that launched the character that became Sherrif Taylor. Thomas was sharp enough to recognize the potential and we all know Andy had the talent to launch an All American franchise. We could all use a little more of Sherrif Taylor in our lives, RIP Andy.

Andy was a Tony award winning actor on Broadway well before television and the movies learned of him.

That's the film Grifith met Don Knotts and began the life long friendship and collaborations. In the film, Knotts administers "hand eye" coordination test to Grifith in boot camp.
