Hi All
Can anyone help, my starter is giving me problems, does any one know if you can get replacement brushes for these starters, America 2005. if so were from would be very helpfull.

any electric component rebuilder or electric motor repair shop as long as you know what you need for size. You can carefully sand larger brushes to size too.

I'm pretty sure you have to replace the starter as an assembly.. and it ain't cheap.

Bike Bandit shows the plate including the brushes.
Not sure about shipping to Aus.
If they show it, any dealer should be able to order it for you.
Part number shows T1310024

May have to clean and under cut the commutator.

Why do you think it is the brushes? I have never heard of anyone needing to replace them let alone the starter. Usually problems are related to the circuit somewhere. Bad battery connections, defective relay, neutral safety switch, low battery, etc etc.

Can you give us some of the symptoms? Cranks slow, not at all, any noise?

Thanks for all your replys, were would i find the starter relay can any one help i have bought a new one but cant find were it goes, i best try that first.
I have renewed the starter solenoid and the battery and cheched for loose conections but that did not cure the problem. not sure what other wires to check if any, hope fully if i can find were the starter relay goes that will be another avenue covered.

Mounted on the right side of the airbox, just remove the side cover and there she is.

Okay, the solenoid is under the right side over as posted. And you've renewed this? The starter relay, aka the headlight cut out is under the tank on the backbone. 5 pin relay, it can be matched at any big box auto parts store.

Thanks i will have a look and change the relay now i know were it is.
The symptoms are no turn over of the starter, just a loud buzzing from the solenoid, but i renewed that and no difference, new battery has well, and still no difference. also checked fuses and all good there. connection to battery is all tight and ok.
Funny thing is as well, the head light both low and high beam does not work, changed the headlight bulb but that was not the problem.
all very confusing, any more help would be of great help thanks so much.

Oh,right,right right..My Bad

Makes sense, that relay cuts out the headlight when the starter is engaged, presumably to allow more current to flow to the starter, and it also engages the solenoid, hence the five pins. Could just simply be corrosion in the relay and the contacts aren't working in either the latched or unlatched state.

Could be a loose or corroded relay socket. I think I might shoot some cleaner in the socket and burnish the pins first...

I take it the starter relay is the solenoid, the same thing, if so yes have replaced that already. ill keep tracing the wires to see if i can find a loose or corroded one some were. thanks for any help keep the advice comming.

No, they are not the same thing. There is a relay too.

could you tell me were the starter relay is ? i looked as sugested behind the side cover but there is only the solenoid there with some other wires but no other relay. i have got a new starter relay but cant find were it gos or find one thats the same to match it up.
any help would be great

As Ian states you have two (2) items here; a relay under the tank that simultaneously cuts out the headlight and engages the solenoid AND the solenoid which engages the starter motor. You've apparently already replaced the solenoid, now you have to remove the tank and check the relay. It's on the right side of the backbone next to the indicator flasher (and the driving light relay if you have a light bar). The rubber keepers on those relays aren't real sturdy and that assembly may have slipped making it vulnerable to water intrusion and subsequent corrosion.

Great, thanks so much, i will remove the tank tomorrow and check it out, i know the one you mean just did not think that would cause the starter or solenoid not to work being its for the headlights.

Hi all
checked out the headlight relay and cleaned it up as advised and, woo hoo, headlights are now back working, but my new battery is now flat with no power. and will not recharge. so its going back to the shop a.s.a.p, now i cannot test if the starter operates and the bike starts untill my new battery is replaced. fingers crossed. anyway
thanks for all your advice, if i still have trouble when my replacement battery arrives ill be back for some more tips.
