well i been waiting all my life for this and it finally happened. my mothers father had severe gout and rumitoid arteritis and i have always been told it could happen to me(its in the blood...oh thanks gramps hahahaha of all the things you coulda left me) . well sun afternoon my hand started swelling for no apparent reason. i had been trimming trees and useing weed whipper so i just thought i had inflamed those tendons that i had repaired some yrs back. but when i woke up mon. morn, i couldnt move my fingers and when my wife touched my hand it hurt so bad i thought i had broken something. i kept saying, if i had jammed it i would have said something like ouch that hurt hahahaha so i knew i hadnt jammed it or broken it but it sure felt like it. so off to the clinic to see the india doctor. FILL OUT THESE FORM....HA you people dont get it, its my right hand and i am right handed. so i get a pager and am told they will page me when its my turn. i take the papers outside, fill out the short form(best i can) lite up a smoke and decide that while i have the time i will call my mom as i havent talked to her in a few days and she likes to stay informed when her kids are hurtin. she sez " you didnt hurt it in anyway?" i said "no mom but it feels broken and it is very swollen" she starts reminding me about her father and his gout problem and that there was a time he was laid up for almost a yr he had it so bad in his feet. i sez"a year?? no way!!! i got daytona this wknd" it was about then they paged me so i go in to see the doc and the nurse that is taking my pressure and temp sez to me "looks like gout to me but lets see what the doc sez" wait in the little room , doc comes in, sez "tell me what you did" "i sez NOTHIN and thats why i am afraid it might be a tendon gave out" he sez "can you move it at all" "i say yea but it hurts like its broken" he sez "i think its gout??" i said CRAP!!!! i am supposed to ride to daytona wed. what do you think?? i tell him about my grandpa and he sez "we got drugs today that he didnt have" "should have you up and runnin by wed but it might be thur before you will be able to ride" so i get the scrips filled and today i can at least move my thumb and 3 fingers so i hope that i improve that much again by tommorow and i will be good to go. but has anybody here ever experienced Gout??? are there any known natural cures,(the pills can cause all kinds of side effects, like stomach bleeding headaches, and i cant seem to get enough sleep) like my father in law sez sour cherries work for his brother??? OK what else, i quit drinkin in 89 and that was the first thing the doc asked "do you drink" NO?? "well dont, its a known caus" but what are some home remidies??? this was just like haveing a broken bone!!!! dam i was so afraid i was not gonna be able to ride for some long time, i wasnt able to go to work yesterday or today and that sucks cuz here i sit at home and cant do nuthin : (aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh was gonna do a little more cleaning of Milli before heading out, but she will have to wait untill we get back. anybody else have gout attacks???? NOT

That's a bad deal Newt!

My dad came down with gout in his elbow last year. Besides the perscibed meds, the MD also gave him a list of foods to avoid. I can ask him what they were, cabbage and stuff like that. Oh, and by the way, whatever he did the swelling and pain went away.

I recall my granpa saying that he avoided the three "B"s during an attack of gout. Beef, Beans and Beer. (sorry about that).

Sorry to hear about your problem Newt,as we all get older there's all manner of things that can go wrong with us,cancer has been our burden in the family with my granddad,my grandma and my father all dying of lung cancer,I did the wise thing of packing up smoking in 98 but as a young man I took several tumbles from motorcycles,to date I've broken my left leg 3 times,my right leg twice, left arm and I've lost count how many times I've broken my ribs(no laughing matter). Now I wait to see what goes wrong in the later stages of my life,

My dad had gout, but because he had such great self-discipline and stuck with the diet precisely,he cured himself. He's still around today at 82. Did your Dr. Give you a diet to follow? I would follow the diet to the letter. Good luck!

Hey Newt
Sorry to hear of your troubles friend.

I'm sorry but the only advice I can give is make sure you are REALY able to ride the bike properly before setting out.
You gotta have full control - no matter how much you want to go to Daytona.

Get well soon

Newt,

Here's the best advise I can give you. Gout mainly affects the joints of the extremities - most often feet. It rarely affects the a$$. My recommendation is to ride more and do less yard work. Take your meds. Watch your diet - particularly during the flair-ups and you'll be fine. There's a whole lot worse that can grab hold of ya - Just be thankful that at your ripe age, something still gets stiff - even if it is your wrists, ankles and toes.

My Dad has the gout Newt. He drinks a ton of wine and eats red meat to excess, and he wonders why it keeps returning! Since you don't drink, watch that diet. Also, try to get some exercise while you are at it. Do not use your hand anymore than necessary prior to Daytona departure. You need that brake hand bro'! Oh yeah, while we are doctoring you up, quit those cigs. That goes for all of you! Hope you can make it over for the weekend.

Ride Safe.

Ryan

The gout is a complaint as arises from too much ease and comfort.

Newt, I have/had gout. Everything I really liked I had to give up, which was no problem after the third or forth attack, because the pain is horrible as you well know! I would get most every attack in the joint of one of my big toes. The last attack was in my wrist. I loved red wine, sea food, goose liver, beer, rich gravies, and red meat. I switched to white wine but that caused problems as well, so I just quite drinking all together. I also became a vegetarian, and after doing that I was able to go without the meds, which as a side effect are really hard on your liver and kidneys. Beyond the pain I believe gout is really hard on your system, and you need to take care of yourself, or you will probably have a shortened life because of it. The good news is it did not take me very long to adjust to a different life style, and it will not take you long either. It is amazing how easy it is to drastically change your lifestyle when enough pain is applied to the problem Vegas

They got some thing in them that purges the gout

From recoverymedicine.com; "Gout Risk Factors, Prevention and Wellness Tips" page:

Quote:

Consume black cherries. Recent studies have suggested that intake of black cherries may benefit people suffering from gout (the gout preventative qualities of cherries seem to be the result of plant compounds found in cherries called anthocyanins).

Cheers,
Brad

Funny we just coverd this in class.. Gout is caused by a buuild of of uric acid in the joint.. Gout is also known as the rich mans pain.. Wht cause Uric acid is founf in foods rich in iron and so on.. Like red meat and ETOH... So put down the steak eat a chicken put back the bud light and get some water.. Some people are predestined ot have it.. Like you body will produce a high level of usric acid and will allways suffer form attacks of gout,,so be good and eat right and you should be okay.. But I am in no way a Dr so take his advise first, then ask me lol..And if you done like what either of us stay,, go have a steak and a beer on me lol...

Hey Newt, lucky you. I was on vacation in Colorado a few years back and got Gout of the toe, talk about crippling!!!! It turned out the doc thinks I have "pseudo-gout", which is calcium crystals in the joint instead of uric acid, but the treatment is the same. It didn't matter what I did, put pressure on it, it hurt, take the pressure off of it and elevate it, it hurt (and BAD!!!!) Of course, the best part was having the ER doc stick a 2mm horse needle into my big toe joint (while his BIG assistant pulled down on my toe to open the joint, something I think they learned from the doc at the Hanoi Hilton!!!!!) They put me on Bextra and Colchicine, and yeah, it's got side effects, but it does the job. I talked to my doc when I got back, and he pretty much blew off all of the stuff they talk about either helping or causing it like drinking, and said you either get it or don't and the best thing to do is manage it. I am always interested in ways to relieve it, but I haven't changed anything, and it only comes back once in a great while, so I figure I'll just keep the meds around for when it does happen. Good luck, keep us posted on what you find out!! By the way, welcome to being an old man like the rest of us. Ha ha!!
