The tire ripped open and it wasn't just a tube failure? Yowza! Dang, John, that had to be some fancy riding to keep it upright. Thank goodness you're okay and the bike came through it with you.

Yeah, the tire ripped open! I haven't dismounted the tire yet, but from looking past the rip, the inner tube has a hole the size of a nickel. It seems the tire blew because the tire case ripped allowing the inner tube to herniate through the tire casing and ride on the road. POW!

I was around the next corner, "Where's John?"
Do a you'e, then not wanting to, but looking to the right. Lo and behold their's John on the left, leaning over the bars wearing a countenance of great relief. Another you'e and up along side him, "What's up?" Points and says "Blow Out".
John and I duck walked and pushed respectively, the ole girl just off the road onto a shoulder that was both narrow and angled away from the roadbed...
Amazing bit of riding John! Karma was in full force, i.e., straight-a-ways timed just so. Bet John has more to say on that huge aspect. Can't say how I would have handled the blow out, but John's results where as perfect as one could imagine. Fine bike handling John. Very fine indeed.

Yeah, pretty lucky. If I hadn't been sick it might have gone on the Richard Russell Parkway the day before that could've been bad or even fatal, not just for me but for others in the group. If it was going to happen that was nearly the perfect place. The only BETTER place would've been within a 30 mile radius from the only motorcycle dealership in Georgia that was open on Sunday and fully stocked with Metzler tires and tubes.
When it blew I was just way too busy keeping it upright to pucker to the seat (by contrast when the Rocket side-stepped on me a few weeks ago on that mountain pass I was way more freaked). I posted a little note in the Save-a-newbie thread. Once I figured out I wasn't going down (after the 2nd or 3rd fishtail) I calmed down quite a bit. I started to notice a lot of things, like not hearing the rim grinding on the ground, the length of the remaining straightaway, Moe riding off into the sunset but being confident he'd turn around almost immediately, and the fact that the more of the front brake I applied, the farther out the ass swung side to side. I didn't touch the rear brake at all.

Speaking of bugs, I just returned the U-Haul truck and Lynn and had lunch at Alfredo's Paradisio. Bug? A german cockroach walking across our table. I flicked it off and mentioned it to Alfredo on the way out. Yes I paid the bill without waiting for his offer of covering the meal. Sometimes you don't see the roaches and some days you do. It'll be a while till I pass through those doors again.

I have to say I get less than I was with the OEM Metz. I forget exactly what I got but it equaled out to about the same cost as running the Metz. So in the end I was spending about the same to run the IRC because it wore out faster but I like the performance of the IRC better. So cost less but wore faster.I don't remember when I put the last one on or I would let you know when this one wears out what I got.Thi8nking about what my bike has on it now I think I got about 7,000 more or less but not really sure.

Guess you ride sedately eh? Quote:

I think a lot depends on the way you ride too. I got about 13,000 out of my Metz if I remember right.I now have about 7,000 on the IRC and I think I'll need to change it at about 10,000 more or less. I like the tire and will probably buy another after I wear out the one I bought for Wendys bikes that didn't fit due to lowering her bike.

There you have it, I thought I remembered 7,000 so I guess it went a couple thousand more, I don't remember for sure. I ride pretty hard but I don't do burnouts and do a lot of twisty riding so I wear one the sides too. That tire looks like it has seen a lot of slab, might be the difference. Or looking back at the pic a nice skid in that spot.

The tire was thread bare 40% of the way round. I have never skidded it and I'm pretty sure John didn't either. I'll never buy another IRC Wild Flare Tire, but still will continue to buy IRC inner tubes. In the last two weeks I clocked 3700 miles on Prudence. A 6000 mile tire (actually a 4500 mile tire) is simple insufficient for my riding. Garbage. Total garbage the IRC wild Flare is. If this thread isn't an ample warning for those considering an IRC Wild Flare well then, never mind...
Of all the rear tires I've worn out, only two got less than 10,000 miles. One of which was an 880 and only then because I picked up a nail and given the tire was close to the end of it's life I opted for fresh rubber. The other is the subject of this thread.
Vera Lynn from April 2006 Avon 42 12,177 miles Avon 42 10,419 miles ME 880 11,374 miles ME 880 7,778 miles Kenda 673 7,817 miles Still mounted and it looks real good.
Cinnamon Girl from April 2008 ME 880 18,427 miles Bridgestone Spitfire 11,032 miles ME 880 14,421 miles Bridgestone Spitfire 10,727 miles IRC Wild Flare 6,003 miles: Blow out

I got like 9000 or 10000 out of the last one according to my post, held the road great and love the tire. I disagree about the garbage assessment but your opinion is your opinion and I don't want to argue the point just as my opinion is mine. I do have a question though, did you have any vibration? I am in the tire business and worn out 40% of the way around is usually a balance issue, worst wear being to one side of that 40%. Could have been a defective tire too, I see those from all manufacturers and out of round would cause that sort of wear too but again you should have had a vibration.Just trying to wrap my head around the failure since I have had such good luck with them, 3 now.But I also got 23,000 out of my OEM Lazertech front and it wasn't totally bald yet but was below 1/32.

I didn't notice any vibration in the last 1200 or so miles of its life.

Just wondered and that is plenty of time to feel it if either condition existed.

I need to check my records and see when I mounted the Wild Flare on the rear of mine, I'm now on the second front after getting more than 14,000 out of it. I'm sure right now it should be over 6000 on the rear, and it will probably need to be changed at the end of the summer. I really like the tires too, they handle really well wet or dry. Hopefully I can find my records...

Dang John, glad you kept things under control. Course it's not quite as dramatic as getting blindsided by an inbred whitetail.
