No, not another oil thread, I just have a quick question.

I just changed my oil and was adding that last little bit to bring the oil level to the middle of the sight glass, when by accident I used some dirty oil that I had put back into last years empty oil bottles . I can't even remember what type of oil it was. It was fairly dark, but not too bad looking. Maybe as much as 4 oz. before I realized what was going on and stopped. For arguments sake, let's assume the worst and say it was lawnmower oil.

So now I have that nagging paranoia that I need to change the oil all over again. But it's only 4 oz, out of a bit more than a gallon. Then again, I don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish.

Am I worrying too much? At $8 per quart for the oil plus the hassle I really don't feel like changing it again. I thinking the new filter will take care of the small amount of added dirty oil.

Feeling like an idiot an looking for opinions.

There is probably 4 oz. residual left in your oil system every change. It has always bugged me that you can't entirely flush out all the old oil.

Won't make any difference, well unless it was cutting oil from a drill press with metal shavings.

That would NOT be good
I think the worst it could be is car or lawnmower oil of
unknown viscosity.

Whew! I'm glad I wasn't the first to offer advice on this subject. However if you decide to keep it in and,, not trying to jinx you but worst case.. you lock up or damage the engine, there's still a bright side... 904, 988 OR 1087!

Pete, the oil + crap you have in the engine after your screw up is 1000 time cleaner than the oil you drained out. I bet your bike was running just fine before you made the oil change, it will now too. Hell your engine had more than 4oz. stuck to the inside of your engine after you drained it.

Do as you wish, probably won't hurt anything, myself, personally, I would drain it and put fresh oil in.

Thanks for the opinions. Even though I'm sure that what's in there now is probably cleaner than what I just drained out, I'm going to change it.

It will bug me too much to not to. I'm not going to change the filter though since that's still fine. I'll only run the engine long enough to get the oil hot to drain.

Then I'll have the cleanest oil ever, since that last little bit that you can never get out will even be cleaner!

Then I can finally without the paranoid feeling!

I'll file this in the long list of dumb sh!t things that I've done and hopefully now will not repeat.

Hey Pete, why not save the oil and put it in some empty oil containers you may have on-hand, and you can use it again some day in something else...

Don't laugh, this idea has me thinking. My son's crappy old Cavalier with 150+ K miles, riding mower, etc...

Thanks for the idea!

I would probably use it in stuff I don't care about too.

Well, I do save the drained oil from my SM for reuse in my lawn tractor...the used oil goes into a large clear plastic screw top container that is clearly labeled "USED - M/C ONLY"...

It's often a rule among the machine erector companies I have worked for, that any container or manual spray bottles (containing solvents, lubricants, adhesives, etc.) that has been opened and or partially used be labeled and dated for future use. Handy habit for future reference and spring cleaning.
