PO said he changed the oil but oil is seeping from around the filter edge. I haven't tried to tighten yet but will just change the filter and oil in the next week or so. I found that Advance Auto sells the Mobil 1 10W40 4T which I will use but have a couple questions.

1. Where do you get the washers for the drain plug? The nearest Triumph dealer is a LONG way away.

2. What filters are available for use on the 2002 America? I know Fram must make one and have seen K&N 191 for sale in various places. Are there other options?

3. Is it possible to put the bike on a bike stand to change the filter?

I use the Purolator filter for our bikes but I don't have the number with me. I hate to admit it but my 04 is still using the original washer, hasn't leaked yet. I haven't found a way to change the oil or filter on a lift so I just lay down on the garage floor and go to it.

Here's a list of filters for our bikes found in the vault.

http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...=true#Post89208

I always put my bike on a stand when doing oil changes.

I use the K&N filter. I've never had any problems with them, and the guy by me who's been working on Triumphs since the 70s swears by them. It makes life a lot easier because the K&N has the bolt on the bottom for easy removal (my filter remover tool was too small and I had to stab and rotate the one the PO put on with a screwdriver to get it off).

I change my oil on the ground as well. It's not worth the time and energy to lift the bike when you can easily get under it with and oil pan.

My washer's still good so I haven't had to get a new one. I'd try an independantly owned garage in your area if the Triumph store is too far.

On a side note: last time I changed my oil I ended up getting the Mobil 1 from the Wally World; it was $3 cheaper per quart than Advance Auto.

I didn't want to turn this into an oil thread... just wanted to know about the filters & washer. The washer may be what is leaking... didn't get a good look at it so will try and find some online. The list of filters is really helpful and I can go armed as most autoparts places or Wallys in my neck of the woods generally offer alternatives.

I'm also running Purolator PL14612, washers can be found at most auto parts store.

I use Amsoil filters and Amsoil oil so I don't have to mess with the filter or oil but once a year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Cinnamon Girl beat the calendar restriction this last oil/filter change.

I mentioned it was the first time I am to change the oil in the BA... how would I know what size and composition washer it was? I am sure I could find something that would work but without knowing anything about the washer, I would have to pull the drain plug and drain the oil with washer in hand to go out and look for one.

Buy a washer that fits an M14 bolt as the drain plug is an M14 x 1.5 Forged bolt.

I am still using my original washer on both the 04s and run Amsoil and use the Napa Gold filter.

I think it drains a little more on the side stand ... With the bike on a slight lean.

Found the reason for the oil seeping problem. There was too much oil in the crankcase. It was very easy to see when the bike was up on my new centerstand. My pan holds 4 qts and there were about 4.5 qts of oil in the bike causing the excess pressure on the seals. I was lucky I didn't blow an engine seal. The only synthetic bike oil that NAPA had is Royal Purple and between the oil and filter, almost $80. (OUCH). I filled the sump to the middle of the upper/lower lines, rode the bike about 1/4 mile and topped it off. Not quite 4 qts. No more seeping or blow-by.

I see the filter listed on Fast Eddy is a KN-204. Does this fit the 790 or just the 865?

A 9/16" copper washer works great if you need to replace it. But if it's your first oil change, you don't. My original lasted for about seven changes.

The drain plug washers are cheap, and I change mine every time. Just order a few from the dealer, or BikeBandit, that way you'll have them on hand for future use.

I use the Bosch 3300 oil filter, and it is short enough that I have never noticed any scraping on the bottom of the old filters when removed. Some filters that fit and will work are a bit taller, and I did find the taller filter scrapes when riding over some "road hump" type speed bumps.

$80.00? That's pretty steep. Shell Rotella T-6 Synthetic and the Bosch 3300 filter should be just a little over $30.00.

I made my $20.00 Bike Lift soon after I brought my baby home, and kept outdoors for 8 years, she's holding up pretty well. That has been one fine investment - one of the best, most useful tools I own. Well worth having.

Now that I've got her running like a top (chronicled here http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...e=0#Post566861) I thought I'd bump this thread up to the top for easy reference.
I'll be changing the oil for the first time since I bought it earlier this year...

If you can't remove it by hand it has been over tightened, should be able to grab it and turn it off with your hand.

Agreed. I've never needed a tool to remove my filter yet.

Bumping this thread only because I'd like to have a spare washer or 2 before I do next oil change. I've only re-used the washer once, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. The Tech Vault states "Aluminum Gasket 14mm (Triumph p/n T3551092)"

But I could not cross reference that to Bike Bandit, where it lists 2 washers (part #11 and 19) http://www.bikebandit.com/2007-triumph-america/o/m17644#sch568635

I'd like to think it's something I should be able to pick up at my friendly McLendon's or Tacoma Screw hardware store. I hate to think what the dealer will charge.

You won't pay the dealer a couple bucks but youll pay bike bandit 10 for shipping?
I buy my filters from the dealer and they just toss em in the box for me.

No, I didn't say I was going to pay Bikebandit. It's just someone said previously to check with them, which I did.

What dealer Z? I-90 or Tacoma ? With the nice weather forecast, maybe I'll make a ride, burn up some the gas sitting in the tank and see what I get.

We've got some great hardware & auto part stores around here. Are they a normal or crush washer ? Does it matter if it's aluminum or copper?

I think if you ask for crush washers you'll get a specific item meant to be crushed a certain distance under torque that won't be the malleable aluminum washer that you want. Any aluminum or copper washer to fit a 14 mm bolt shoud be right.

It's really all about the washer deforming to fill the uneven surfaces between the bolt head and the casing. You'll find a lot of copper sealing washers on the old Triumphs where oil is involved. In theory any heat proof material would work as long as it becomes malleable at torque.
