So my son is seriously into trains, and I mean seriously so this little project made his day. The base is a wood box covered in speaker box carpet. I wired in a switch so he could turn it off and on that way instead of unplugging it. Used PCV for the poles. I took some tail lights for a trailer and rewired some candelabra lights in it instead. Used 7w night light bulbs. I cut and painted some steel to go over the tail light assembly and mounted to the arms with U clamps. I think it turned out pretty good but it's the little guys opinion that really matters. He loves it!

Very cool, Chris! Did you think this up yourself or find some plans for it? (...either way, I think it's great!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Ya, Dwight. I just thought it up. Pretty simple really, anybody could have done it. I did look for one first but found nothing. Internet, hobby shops, Antique Malls, you name it so it came down to just doing it myself which was a lot more fun anyway. Total cost...50 bucks maybe.

There's NOTHING you could have done better for your son! This is what makes little boys (and girls) think their fathers are heroes, and what rightfully makes them so.

Thanks for all the great comments, guys. I think Karl hit it on the head when he said, "things we do for kids reward us by their joy, laughter, and smiles." So true, so true.
