"an tea!" I love it, Bryn! But you'll have to remember that Ed Norton (he's the skinny one there...actor Art Carney) wasn't supposed to be the sharpest knife in the ol' drawer on the old "Honeymooners" sitcom, and that's why he says "a apple". But then again you know how those Yanks have always butchered the language, don't cha?! (...and now back to our program: "The Coffee, and hopefully Tea Maker of the FUTURE"!)

Geez I feel like a coffee now. The only thing that video was missing was that delicious coffee aroma. I wonder how much that baby goes for?

I bet for the price of the scanomat top brewer, you could have a lifetime free starbucks pass. I see one snafu with the machine though. Does the manufacturer really think that folks lazy enough to buy this product will not scoff at having to add their own sugar?

Having been in the coffee and tea business for the 30+ years I find it truly amazing what some people pay for and think is a great cup of coffee, including most of the national chains. There are two types of coffee beans produced, Arabica and Robusta and five grades of coffee beans, (1) being the best quality product of each type and (5) the lowest grade. Arabica beans are the better product and produce a milder flavor coffee ( not a weaker flavor). Robusta beans are the least desirable and cheaper product producing a more acidic bitter flavor. Oiler as well. You can make either product as strong as you like by a darker(longer) roast or a heavier throw. The darker the roast the less the caffeine. Don’t confuse a dark strong flavor profile with a caffeine buzz. That’s your subconscious listening to what’s been marketed for years. Let’s use Starbucks ( the fast food kings of the coffee world) as an example. While they have done a great job of marketing their brand and making coffee relevant again the product is an inferior product. While their marketers and website will claim otherwise they use a higher mixture of Robusta beans and lower quality number (3). Roast it very dark (see slightly burned) and promote the profile as “Gourmet” And boy they have done a great job of this. Not to miss out on the opportunity to make a buck Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds have done a great job of upgrading their coffee lines. Recently in more than one blind taste test Dunkin’s and McDonalds were preferred over Starbucks. I’m sure the Tim Horton, Gloria Jean’s, Caribou, Peet’s, Seattle’s Best etc. fans will have an opinion on this. Props again to Starbucks as most of these chains would be irrelevant without the Starbucks explosion. That’s coffee 101 for the day. Now get a cup of joe and get back to work.

Mike thanks for the education. I'm just a Maxwell House / Mr. Coffee kind of guy. I drink about 30 to 40 cups a day. My ex use to do what I call the "ritual", grinding the beans etc. The coffee was great, but I only occasionally do the "ritual" as I'm too lazy and cheap. There's a Starbucks 3 blocks from my house, but I'm too lazy and cheap, never been there. As for as Friar's post, very cool! It reminds me of food processing equipment in some plants I've been in. I've built some multi-million $ homes, but 10 grand is a lot of $ for a coffee maker, plus maint. problems down the road. But, it is cooler than sh-t.

What's your thoughts on coffee storage? Whole beans. I freeze mine. Tried the leave em out in the ambient room thing and thought they staled way too fast. What I noticed with Peet’s is that the beans freeze in clumps. Perhaps due to that oil mentioned above. Oil being Robusta rabbit spheres. Purchase Starbucks when it goes on sale for $6.99 or Peet’s for $8.99. Grind it and press it; wishing for a burr grinder, liking snekeptp’s more than starducks.

Jim, I would not recommend the freezer or fridge as the bean has a tendency to collect moisture. Not sure why this would be more prevalent with Peet’s product. I store my personal supply in a ceramic container with an airtight cover in a cool area. The green product ( non roasted) will last for a very long time, years maybe but the roasted product tends to breakdown much quicker. I would not plan to hold them for longer than a couple of months.

That machine is nice. I would like to have one of those added to my bar and a 3 keg cooler - draught system for yuengling, Guinness and something for other people. Better start planning

I only go to Starbucks when my favorite local place is closed (after 4 or 5). My favorite place roasts their own beans and it's pretty good stuff (IMO). I just use Dunkin Donuts at home.

Man how do you sleep at night? This coffee thing is starting to get a little too complicated. I'm off to make a simple pot of tea. Cuppa anyone?

I want a 12 volt one to mount on my bike! Love a coffee on an early morning ride, that would beat the thermos cup for sure.

Timmy's "Very Creamie" the percentage of butter fat in the cream they is use is their attraction. Coming to an American city near you soon. A friend gets 5 creams in hers, you'd never know it by her figure.

Coffee does help me get going in the mourning, but it doesn't bother me at night. I drink it all day. I like hot tea for a change once in a while, but I can't drink more than 2 or 3 cups, gives me the gitters.

Difficult to answer. There are a lot of countries that grow great products but like any harvested product a lot depends on the plantation (growers) and the bean quality. Jamaica's Blue Mountain is very good and very expensive. Hawaii's Kona is also good but a bit over rated and expensive as well. Brazilian, some Colombian and Indonesia's Sumatra are all fine products.
I too like the "coffee" unit shown in the video and could see this working quite well in a cafe. Someone mentioned having to add sugar. This unit is programmable and a liquid sugar would be added to the profiles and stored under the counter if one desired. So grab your favorite cup and the remote

Kopi Luak is what I believe you are referring to. I remember learning about that in a coffee roasting training.

Mike, is it true that coffee grown at higher elevations is somehow better?

Well being that I'm prior Navy, I like to make it as strong as possible, then let it sit for 3 to 4 hours until I see a sludge in the bottom. Being Southern I also like my sweet ice tea. Just kidding bout the coffee, but will drink most of it, had a subscription , prescription, whatever you like to call it to Boca Java, dececnt coffe and blends but way to expensive. Think I'd prefer my beer and booze but can't really drink that all day unless I'm fishing.

Keith, higher elevations do indeed produce a less acidic and richer product, thus the Jamaican Blue Mountain and Hawaiian Kona are grown in higher elevations. You will recall Folgers’s tag line "mountain grown" that played on that bit of knowledge.
