Now why in the world would anyone want to ruin a perfectly good bottle of rye whiskey by putting maple syrup in it? Dad gum, that would be like putting water in a good single malt!

I've spent many a 12-15 hour layover at Gatwick airport. In there is a liquor store with the most amazing Scotch section you could ever imagine. In the Scotch section is a Scottish Scotch expert who provides samples of various single malts (I was trapped in the airport long enough to see shift changes at the liquor store and went back to sample more.) Anyway, each time I ended up there the staff Scotch expert insisted on a dram of water with each and every shot, explaining the importance of such to bring out the best qualities of the Scotch.
I, on the other hand am not an expert and say, "drink 'er up any way you like," but I do enjoy letting the rocks melt a bit before savouring a newly poured shot of Scotch.
Btw, John... if I run across Maple Rye in these parts, shall I set aside a bottle for your visit up here in July?
Live to love, love to live.

Sure. But just knowing it's available up there would be cool. I can bring a bottle back in July.

I never thought anyone could come up with a good reason for being at Gatwick for for 12-15hrs (3hrs waiting for a flight out is bad enough) but I think you just came up with one Keith. Next time I'm 'lucky' enough to flying from there, I'll arrive 5-6hrs earlier

i'll be hanging out in that very same boootique come may 25th Keith, guess what ill be doing waiting for my flight . so as to the tasting of whisky ,i was told this from a master blender , most whiskys be they malt ,grain or what ever they make this N American stuff from ,need a wee splash of water to open up the whisky releasing all the hidden and complex flavoUrs within .ice is a big nono ,it kills the flavoUrs . i was for many many years a cube in ma dram guy ,never the dreaded water but i gotta tell ya it does make quite a difference with a wee splash (but no yon chlorinated pish, bottled only). John i checked the BCLS catalogue and its not carried here yet ,i'll keep an eye open for it . and just for my Balvenie swiggin mate Dwight ,capital superflous U's for U .BTW just had some 21yo balvenie portwood ,to effing die for.

Oooh. I'm sorry to say I haven't had the opportunity to try that 21yo Balvenie Portwood yet Gordie, but Mike(FCTush) once brought some of the 14yo Balvenie Carribean Cask to the SWTF for us to try, and that turned out to be delicioUs!
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
