so on friday i had a very bad day and i thought to myself, "self, you need some motorbike therapy. start a project."
so i set out to diagnose my inop tail light (it was a fuse), install a HID kit in the front (never got around to it), and wrap my headers and paint the pipes that look like poo since i banged the baffles out and ground off the heat shield welds.
so i pulled the headers and wrapped them and let them set over night. in the morning they were still damp so i installed them and backed the bike out to run it and let them cure, no pipes. HOLY CRAP, it sounded awesome. obnoxiously loud, like a raped hippo or something. i was highly surprised to find that my girlfriend liked it quite a bit, so we took a ride down the coast, scatological grin in tow. the performance was only minimally different from the jet setup i'd gotten from the calculator. lost just a little bit of torque. might hit up jc whitney for some short turn-downs and add a washer welded to a bolt for some backpressure, but it's seriously not bad.
long story short, it's really awesome. i will probably paint the pipes and put them back on (for the sake of the neighbors), but i'll probably be taking them off if i ever go to an event (for instance may 20, social distortion at pozo saloon).

If you decide to go with JCW turnouts I got the 27 inch ones. I had to baffle them to get some backpressure but I really like them. A couple of things I found. At first they seemed too loud but I found that if you turn them straight down at the pavement the sound echos right back into your helmet but if you turn them out like some old school sidepipes they sound great. They are 3 inch pipes after the connector pipe. You can drag them fairly easy. I considered trying to turn them out at about a 45 degree angle so when I was cornering aggressively they would be parallel with the ground. I made my own baffle for them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/60014732@N05/5863850997/the video is the day I put them on and hadn't experimented too much..I.E no baffles

well i'm pretty happy with just the headers, and if i got anything, it'd be the shortest ones i can get. but i certainly appreciate the input.

Nice bike. You guys keep some distance between ya when ya ride together.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I have a set of fully debaffled stock slash cuts for sale on the Classifieds if anyone is interested. Awesomely loud. Didn't notice any deterioration in performance with these on.
