Looking for something comparable to a Davida, without the price tag of one. Prefer 3/4 style lids. What are the options out there?

Nexlsports Nexl's NXT Helmets are much thinner than normal. They don't use polystyrene but instead use a different polymer. I have a half helmet and love it. They are DOT approved which is obviously important. They also have full faced ones as well. I bought mine locally so I have no info on how they are when ordering direct. Johnny

Since there's no helmet laws here in PA, i'm not too worried about the helmet being DOT certified. Are there any good non-DOT certified helmets that are small and thin that you guys recommend?

Okay, so I gotta ask... why bother with a cheap non-protective helmet in a state with no helmet laws?

Baby steps, Keith. Baby steps! Uh huh. What say ya let Paul there in Pennsylvania FIRST discover how much more comfortable ridin' a motorcycle usually is while wearin' a helmet(depending upon the style and the fit, of course), and THEN maybe LATER he'll come to the realization that wearin' one is usually ALSO a mite safer practice than NOT wearin' one, TOO!!! Everyone DOES have their own "Learnin' Curve", ya know dude! (...I mean, just look how long it took Chad down there in the Lone State State to come to this little "epiphany", HUH???!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I've been riding street bikes on/off for the past 20 yrs and dirtbikes the past 30 yrs. All mostly with a helmet! Also have been an EMT for the past 20 yrs and have seen the outcome of what happens with no helmet. I do wear a helmet when riding anything more than quick trips and back and forth to work (less than 5 miles at 30 mph). But I do like to engage in practicing my freedom to either not wear a helmet or wear a really light and not so noticable one. Hence the post here

Sorry Paul, I couldn't resist. I did have a feelin' you normally were a helmet wearer. My little "baby steps" thing there was meant more for "general consumption" around here and for those who might spot your thread and who normally choose(btw, I love the idea of choice also) to ride "lid-less". And as you said, bein' an EMT and all, I'm sure you HAVE seen some consequences of lid-less riding while performing your duties and how one's skull isn't as hard as many people evidently think theirs is. And, as I've stated many a time around here, I know for almost certainty(from the large asphalt scraped impact area located just around where my left temple resided underneath the helmet) that one o' these here brain buckets(a 3/4 style number) saved me from some serious head injury about 17 years ago when some kid in an old beat-up Toyota pulled over into me from another lane and totaled my brand spankin' new 1995 Triumph Sprint, with the ultimate result of only a badly sprained left ankle from it bein' crushed between the kid's right front fender and my brand spankin' new (but as I said, ultimately totaled) Triumph Sprint. (...which btw happened during MY ride to work of about only 7 miles AND at an estimated speed of only about 30MPH...which sounds pretty much like the sceanario YOU described where you choose to ride lid-less...ironic, ain't it?!)

Ask Bobby Petrino about that; said he didn't want to wear a helmet that made him look like a cone head, but had a 25 yr old blond on the back of his Harley (not his wife) that makes him look like a dick head. If he'd had a full face helmet he could have left it on (after riding into the ditch) to hide his now red face.

Yep and big "D" is correct on all matters here. It is very much more comfortable to wear one than not. I love my Z1R 3/4 helmet. I found out through some study that Z1R helmet delivered much less G forces to you head in the crash tests. Plus you can personalize a helmet much easier than your head. See my helmet here in this picture.

I'm going to second ole Dwight here. I can also personally attest to the benefit of wearing a good DOT approved 3/4 helmet with a faceshield. I went down last fall and the majority of the road damage (to me) was to my helmet and faceshield (thank God). I know it sounds like hindsight to say it... but if I didn't have it on the outcome could have been tragically worse.

Yeah, I was also going to say the biltwell non-dot is probably what you're looking for. I have a bell custom 500 and I really like it. I went with bell because they had 2xl, I don't think I could have squeezed my melon into a "one size fits most".

2xl - in that bitwell may be a weeee bit tight! haha i figure that one size fits all is a medium-largeish.
i always looked at on-dot ones as - its alot better than you naked skull smaking the gound, but its no life saver.

X2. I've seen DOT helmets not help in serious accidents. I'm just looking for something thin and better than nothing. I do like wearing a helmet for wind noise reduction and to eliminate sunburn

According to their website, the Vega XTS naked is the smallest DOT approved helmet out there. It's a half helmet though. I got it because it's a DOT approved half helmet, and I wanted something that goes close to my head otherwise I get major mushroom head.
I've been wearing one for about 6 months now and love it. Doesn't pull up or anything.
