Can't listen to it right now at work. But, why is it that when there is a mashup/mix of two bands or songs people say "vs"? Its a mix, not a competition.

And why would anyone "mashup" two bands. Obviously they are completely different styles. I suppose it's sorta like stealing, err I mean sampling someones track into another song. However I did enjoy this "mashup/sampling" back in the day. I've always had an appreciation for musicians who can laugh at what they do. Walk This Way

Yeah, Thats interesting, But Led Zeppelin is way better than the beatles, any day.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I dunno, Zepp was pretty good, but the Beatles came out with hit song after hit song, back in the day. Hell, even the flip sides of the 45 would be a chart topper. They peaked with the White Album, IMO

I'm SURE they beat Zeppelin (and possibly ALL others) at the bank, without the old music rights.

Saw Zep on their last tour. Played for 3 1/2 hours with no warmup band.
Best concert I ever saw and I saw all the bands of the '70s.

How many songs, did J. Page get jammed for stealing lyrics and music? I lost track.

It's blues. It's a twelve bar progression. There's only so many ways you can play blues in G (actually, there's only one way but then you riff off of that). Hard to take a claim of ripping off blues too seriously.
Jimmy could hold his own.

I saw them in Detroit at the Olympia arena just after release of the second album. Still remember the trails coming off of Pages bow when he bounced them off the strings. May not have been just the music. Could have been the lights.

Google: "jimmy page plagiarism" Saw L Zep in person twice,69 and 71, awesome live band show, sounded as good in real life as on a studio album. Page had a bad habit appropriating others work, all the way back to the Yardbirds, that's all.

I'm not sure what you're saying. Jimmy Page was in the Yardbirds. I dunno, like I said, ripping off a blues riff is, well, a blues riff.
We're probably talking about repeating 3 chord progressions. If there was anything that could be proven, as he was in Led Zep, he would have been in court (see George Harrison and 'He's So Fine').

Well Chet, if you don;t want to google "jimmy page+plagiarism" I shouldn't have to explain it to you. Blues riffs and lyrics aren't quite the same thing, to my way of thinking and I typed that really slow.

It's not just the blues riffs. They took lyrics as well. They have been sued more than once, but all was settled out of court. "You Need Love" by Willie Dixon is one (for Whole Lotta Love). "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" (a folk song by Anne Bredon) was another settled out of court. "Dazed & Confused" was by Jake Holmes. He opened for the Yardbirds and that's where Page was made aware of the song. Don't know what was determined with that one. The intro to Stairway to Heaven is from an instrumental called "Taurus" by Spirit. Zep used to see them perform. Randy California was aware of it but never cared to take legal action. I dug Zep's takes on these songs, i'm justing stating the facts that i have known for some time.

Blues 1 Rock 1 Unless anyone here is getting royalties its like the song "Lets Call the Whole Thing Off". Ella and Satchmo said it best. WE benefit from THEIR (re)creations.

Is it wrong to admit to liking this. Cant decide who is best and i dont think we should. Both bands have significant historical importance. In addition to the fact that they are both friggen brilliant.

Love the reemix and enjoyed both bands, but for me Zeppelin all the way. What ever they pulled from others was made harder, badder, and better.

I think Zeppelin was absolutely great at rockin' the Blues...HOWEVER...considering Lennon and McCartney would not only produce some great Blues riffs themselves (i.e.: "I Want You/She's So Heavy", among many other tunes), but L&M (and least we not forget George Harrison) also managed to make great music in the Rock and Roll, Pop, Rockabilly, English Music Hall, Hard Rock, Country, Ballads, Psychodelia, Instrumentals, Soul, Folk, Indian and Symphonic genres.
And so, because of their mastering of all these different varieties of music, I have to say I think The Beatles were "the best".
(...and don't forget, IT WAS The Beatles that started the whole "British Invasion" of the '60s, and creating the impression among the American Youth of the time that British musical acts were "cool")

And an interesting bit of (Beatleish) trivia: Last night we had some friends over for dinner and I had one of my favorite female singers playing in the background, Norah Jones. One of my friends, who is a bit of a musician, told me that she is Ravi Shankar's daughter. Learned something new.

Getting a bit off topic here, but Ravi Shankar also has another daughter, that of Anoushka who followed his sitar footsteps in a more Indian traditional way. I've enjoyed many videos featuring Anoushka... here's one with both her and her father. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igDsu5QWhpo

I must be well versed because I thought that was common knowledge.
Loved Zepplin but the Beatles were just something different. They weren't just a band. They were some sort of cultural phenomena.
I just put them in their own category.

Somebody pointed this performance of "Whole Lotta Love" on one of those Idol shows that I never get to see, nor watch anyway! But this is not a bad rendition at all... pretty smokey! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usn3o3kle44

On this day in 1964 the Beatles occupied the top 5 spots on the Billboard Top 100.

I grew up with Zeppelin but only recently began to truly appreciate the Beatles. As song writers, its tough to argue against the Beatles but nothing beats some of those Jimmy Page licks (excluding David Gilmour of course)

Agreed, who didn't like the Beatles in sixth grade. But, the older I got I appreciated the later albums more than when I bought them. Still, I prefer Zeppelin. Call me a ex-hippy snob, but I never heard Zeppelin in an elevator.

Oh, I don't know about that, Mac. I'm pretty sure I've heard "Stairway to Heaven" while ridin' inside one of Mr. Otis' contraptions at one time or another! Which if you THINK about that, IS kinda ironic in a way, ain't it?!
(...speakin' o' which, do ya suppose there's any truth to the rumor that Rich is pipin' Zeppelin's music into the elevator he built in his new house???)
