www.quitnet.com fun, free and helpful along with wellbutrin and patches, Best thing you can do for your health right now. Needed the combination of things, one did not work for me, It is not easy, and I do not like to be uncomfortable, Keep up the work and you can get there, Good Luck. Keep at it, there is nothing good about the habit, it is about the drug. You can do it!

ED,
I stopped smoking after a heart attack on new years day 2011, yeah it took a 2x4 to the side of my head to wake my dumb a** up. I smoked at least 2 packs a day for 45 years... it is never too late. I stopped by using Chantix from my Dr., patches, gum & the rest still put nicotine in your body...it's like stopping drinking by switching to beer only. I did gain 20 lbs (not easy to stop in Jan. when the weather sucks and all there is to do is eat) but I am back down to fighting weight. I have never felt better and I am saving $360.00 a month. Everything I use to do included smoking, it was a habit and a ritual. In my past (being a child of the 60's) I had been addicted to all types of substances and the honest truth...Tobacco was the hardest to give up..hell, I liked smoking & I still like the smell of smoke floating in the air. I admit that I had a little help in stopping, the day I had my heart attack is the same day my Mother passed away from COPD, and other smoking related ailments. It's never too late.

Ride like you mean it.

I quite smoking 26 years ago, quit drinking at the same time. Tried to quit before but found it quite hard since when I would drink I wanted to smoke. Once I quit both it was quite easy.I now , after 23 years without a drop, have a dark beer once in a while. Never more than 2 most weeks non at all.

I also quit after a heart attack in 2005. I did it cold turkey after 37 years. Was lucky to survive. Do whatever it takes to quit. Your body and your wallet will thank you very much.

I wouldn't recommend my method. 4+ years ago I go so sick I physically couldn't breathe deep enough to smoke, for about a week. By the time it was possible I figured I'd been through the worse, so I was done. It worked, but as a smoking cessation method I'd rate it preferable to being in a ICU after a heart attack, but little else.

I applaud your decision! I only smoked for about three years, age 16 to 19. But my wife quit after 25 year, about a year before I married her, 13 ago. She felt better very soon after quitting. It's gonna make your life way better if you can make it through the first couple of months or so. Good luck to ya!

thanks for the replies, for us its about the health part, and its darn near impossible to smoke anywhere anymore without being shunned upon it seems LOL , next we will be huddled into little smoke rooms on the side of the road or such, getting kind of nuts.

I was a heavy smoker for 35 years. I loved smoking. Loved the hit. I gave up 6 years ago by switching to gum and I was on gum for 3 years! I was still getting all the nicotine for those 3 years but it gave my lungs a chance to heal and recover and it broke the physical hand ritual. I then switched to Eclipse gum (powerful mint) which still gave the sensation of a hit to the lungs with no nicotine.

I big psychological step for me was to remember my identity BEFORE I started smoking - because smoking seemed to be part of me part of my identity. Remembering that there was a time when I was complete without it helped.

My point is ... everyone may have a different method of quitting. Don't give up quitting - it doesn't matter how long it takes.

Cheers, Richard

I quit smoking 10 years ago. It was the best thing i ever did but also one of the hardest. I used the patches. They worked for me. I stayed on the "First Step" for months, way past the recommended time, then changed to the "Second Step". Stayed on that for ages. Then one day i realized that not only had i forgotten to put a new patch on, but i no longer craved a smoke.

It's not easy, but it's worth it in the end....Good Luck!

36 years of Marlboro red. Quit now 6 years. I still miss them. Not craving just the reward/break part of it. I don't miss hacking up a lung in the morning, spending thousands of bucks a year, smelling like an ash tray, my truck smelling like a fire just happened in it. There is nothing good about smoking at all.

I look at it as I did not quit smoking, I rejected them from my life. I am free of them. It is doable. Its hard and takes a commitment. If I did it, you can. I was a major nicotine addict.

I quit 28 years ago after smoking for 16 years. One thing that helps is to start doing something physical where you can see your progress.
Not only is it good for you, it helps you not want to smoke, and can help keep the weight gain down. Seems most people (me included) quell the desire to smoke by snacking. That's OK, pick healthy, low calorie snacks and keep active.

Like others have said: use whatever you can to quit. Your lives depend on it.

Mike, it was 3 1/2 years ago that I smoked my last fag, and THIS after 40 years of smokin' and loving it! Yup, Nic and I finally parted ways, and to be honest I'm glad I'll never see the bugger again. Monkey off my back.

Now, take it from me... it CAN be done. And being done with Nic is sooooo liberating. Tell you what, Mike... take some of that money you spent on cigs and spend it on your bike. Move on ahead in a new direction and kiss that part of your past good-bye. Decide, do, enjoy. Your life is about to open up to amazing new possibilities! Good on ya for starting out on your journey of "life without Nic." Nic's an ass anyway!!!!

I gave up drinking first, then in 1999 I was told I needed a triple by-pass.I was told I had to quit smoking or the operation would be pointless
I didn't want to quit at that time.Although I had tried many times before.
This time I finished the carton I had, cutting down over a few days, then switched to gum for a few months and managed to stop. That was 13 years ago.Other times I'd tried cold turkey and managed to go a few weeks some times but always went back to it.As someone else said, don't quit quitting.
keep trying and you'll get there. It's the best thing I've done healthwise

thanks Keith, i think the habit not the addiction part will be the toughest for me, you know, beer, smoke, working in the garage, smoke, fires in the pit, smoke ARG.... we have decided to give champix a try, read up on it, seems to be very successfull for allot of people with the desire to give up the Nic. Looking to fire it up or rather start fireing it down as it were April first, Nelson without Nic??? will be very new to me.

You're welcome, Mike. Yup, I used Champix too and it did help. There were some bizarre side effects for me but I didn't take it for long... maybe 3 weeks. The big thing is you have to WANT to quit. If ya got that, you WILL quit for sure. Then you have to reinvent yourself. Like you said, there is having a beer and a smoke, phone call and a smoke, the after dinner smoke, coffee and a smoke, etc. But you will adjust because of how liberating it is NOT to smoke. The rewards far outweigh the old patterns. No more of the friggin' inconvenience of smoking... like having to go outside in sub-zero weather just to feed the habit. That ain't fun! And you will smell better... that's a huge benefit. And ya know what? You'll feel happier... and rather proud of yourself for doing yourself a huge favour. It's a great feeling, Mike... it really is. You can and WILL do this. I look forward to hearing about it all when you hit Nelson this summer.

I guess I got lucky when I first started smoking...

Strange thing to say, but in my case, it worked.

I tried my first cigarette at the age of 8. Fled to the forest with a (bad influence) friend, and he gave me one to smoke. I inhaled and swallowed at the same time. I got so sick, it cured me for the rest of my life. I never bought a pack since. I guess that's what I'll do if I ever get kids!

I've tried other kinds of smoke, but I never went back to cigarettes.

Quit if ya want to, but if ya don't want to then don't. I support ya either way. You can only do the best that you can do. I don't think smoking is a moral question at all. If ya wanna quit though wheat grass is a good suplement to help ya past the with the cravings.

I probably stole my first cigarette from mom when I was around 6-7. I remember because I got caught and was whipped. I continued that trend for a few years. By the time I was 12 years old I was a regular smoker. Kool was my brand Back then cigarettes were available via vending machines everywhere for .25 cents a pack. Hey, I also had a job @ 12 and was basically supporting myself so I thought I was an adult Somewhere along the way I move on to Marlboro’s. Probably because of the Marlboro man’s add campaign.
At 26 and a pack a half a day smoker, married and planning a family I stopped cold turkey. Laid down the cancer sticks and for the most part never looked back, that was 28 years ago. I’ll be honest for many years the thought was still there, after a meal, a cup of coffee, a drink or a tuff day. A trick I used was to make sure I had a pack with a couple of old dried out smokes handy, not a fresh pack. If the craving got too much I’d hit one of them old crusty boys and that was a great reminder to not start back up.
I guess I have strong will power but I could never understand people that have tried and tried but just “ can’t kick the habit”.
Hell today the cost savings alone should be reason enough.

story is much like my own, was likley 10 or so when i started , regular around that 13 or 14 mark, that was 30 years ago, i have never been a real "heavy" smoker even today its less then a pack a day and closer to half on average, i even played semi pro junior hockey as a smoker (Ottawa 67's for those Canadians in here). I guess thats the problem, i like smoking, but as i get older mortality starts kickin in a bit and well, change is good for the soul they say. I think i will take up lollipops!

Ah, you guys are starting to inspire me again to quit. I started in 1972 and average a pack a day. I've tried cold turkey, patches, gum and chantix. Longest I've made it is about 10 months. If reason beat desire, I'd have quit years ago, but addiction plus desire trump reason almost every time, at least for me. I'll be thinking hard on it for sure.

The wife and I quit 15 years ago. She quit cold-turkey, but I went the Welbutrin and Patch route. I got over the occasional urges by standing outside with the smokers I worked with.

After about a month, we repainted the house inside, replaced all the upholstered furniture, carpets and drapes. The house still smells clean.

Reward youself for success.

10 years ago this month I told my wife I would quit smoking if i could buy a bike. She didn't believe me one bit as she knew I loved to smoke. Well 3 months later she was dropping me off at the Triumph dealer to pick up my shiny new Bonneville America!
I found the easiest way to quit was to buy 2 of the Patch kits and double up the time on each dose. That way it takes you down real slow!

Do it, the sooner the better.

Is there even one legit reason not to quit?

Really if you ponder it, are you in control of your decisions and actions? Or, are you a slave to the 'craving' & marketing of the tobacco companies?

Are you strong enough to choose the best for you? Or, do you choose to surrender your free will, your money, your health, your future, to support the profits of those institutions?

I'm not judging. I only ask.

+1

Been thinking about it for a while

Strangely, I can go 150 miles on the bike without a smoke, but I can't go 150 yards without one in the van

I quit cold turkey all those years ago, my advice is to change any habits you associate with a smoke. My hardest times were after a meal. Had I not stopped drinking I probably wouldn't have quit smoking.

Remember when Kent cigarettes had 'micronite'(SP?) filters? Know what a 'micronite' filter was made of?

Asbestos !!!

You would have to wonder if there is anyone still living that smoked nicotine through asbestos filters.

I wouldn't be surprised if the tobacco was also toasted on lead plate with arsenic treated wood shavings.

I quit cold turkey all those years ago, my advice is to change any habits you associate with a smoke. My hardest times were after a meal. Had I not stopped drinking I probably wouldn't have quit smoking.

+1 Ian. I've said for years that if it weren't for eating, drinking and sex that nobody should have a problem quitting.
But, quitting is doable and the benefits outweigh all sacrifices. Hang in there.

So, how are people doing?

I'm not doing too bad, but some days are hell

Gave up cold turkey after 38 years and used the money to buy a 250 after being without a bike for 20years. Best deal ever, after 3 more years used the money saved to buy the TBA. Wanted a Triumph since I was a teenager. Find something you want more than that next cigarette.

My TBA was my reward for quitting. Best thing I ever did!
