Folks

The sun is out and tomorrow (when it gets above freezing) and I want to take off into the sunset, suitably wrapped up in toastie clothing. However, when I tried to start the engine this morning, the battery died.

Now for the stupid question: how do I get the d**n seat off! Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and I can't remove the seat to get to the battery to get to a charger! After 20 minutes (yes, a whole twenty) of looking at the manual (which, incidentally, helpfully says you shouldn't need to take the seat off - end of story) I can find no "Allen key" hidden in the right-hand cover, no "release tabs" apparently hidden under the seat. And all I want to do is ride!!

And as an aside, not only does this month's Esquire magazine have a delightful picture of Rosario Dawson on the cover, but a delightful ad for the Rocket III on the inside back.

Any help gratefuly accepted - any mockery shamefully deserved.

Siggy

Why do you need to get the seat off to get to the battery? Are you one of the few, the proud, who has relocated the battery there? If so, you should already know how to get the seat off.

First remove the passanger seat by removing small bolt at the rear of the seat. Push forward until it releases from the driver seat. Then remove bolt at the back of the driver seat and slide it back until it releases. When you get it off you will be able to see how it works and putting it back will be easy. Good Luck

Ok Siggy,
Follow Wayne's instructions - then you will know how to do it next time, also you will find your air intake!!!
For battery look on right side of bike, square thing with chrome strip - take off shinny thing with holes in it (9mm alan key), then you will be able to take off shinny strip on square thingy. Then you will find Battery!!!(large square thing with two horns)

Mmmmm.... make that the LEFT side. You will need a torx driver to get the battery strap loose, I forget what size.

If you cannot work out how to get the seat off on your own, should you really be thinking about attaching a charger to your battery???? Maybe Mrs Stern12 can come over & help!!

I suppose technically that could be misconstrued as a stupid question

True craftsmanship is using the correct wrench (spanner) to pound in the proper screw.

OK Guys

Crushed and humiliated I may be, but I have the seat off, the battery out, and the charger running. My momentary lapse of reason will be rewarded by a long ride and the Thrill of the Twisties as I head for Starbucks.

I prefer to think of myself as "ignorant" rather than "stupid." If I'd been truly stupid, I wouldn't have even asked the question and spent more days than I had to without riding. But thanks for the help: I knew you'd do it

So feel free to pour on the abuse - because tomorrow I won't be around to read it

Siggy

p.s. I think "Thrill of the Twisties" may well be the title of the next Elton John album - sounds familiar, no?

No abuse Siggy, you must be thinking of some other board.

But pay attention screwing the seat bolt back in. It has the appearance of one of those "bits" easy enough to cross thread. That could ruin your day.

Sigmund,
Did'ya get to your battery? If not, the easy way:

Snick your bike into 2nd gear, pull in the clutch, start pushing (down the driveway?), after a little speed hop on & release the clutch, Voila..... she's runnin'!!

Ride'er around for an hour or so & the battery should be charged, assuming it ain't Kapoot!!

Hey, at least you knew when to ask! The first time I removed my seat. I stuck a wrench between the riders saddle and the pillion to remove the bolt, pretty difficult. Gratefully, I didn't harm anything.

Don't let these guys get to you to bad. I got nailed for a question about patches on my vest some time ago and don't post much anymore. In my eyes the only stupid question is one not asked.

Bikes or blue collar jobs, you'd better have a bit of thick skin if you want to survive. It's just normal guy behavior to bust on each other. Ask Pat, he's the king of the nad busters.

But don't let it keep you from posting. Just blow off our little digs, or give it right back. None of us are perfect, we all screw up. Just ask my wife.

That's funny,

I did exactly the same thing, muttering the whole time - "who designed this stupid arrangement, probably need a special seat bolt wrench". Once I got the seats off, the freak brackets were a piece of cake, at least there weren't any extra fasteners laying around. Wait, did I just admit that out loud???

For what it's worth, I did actually know where the battery was - that big square box down by my left-hand side - I just couldn't figure out how to get at it without possibly damaging my precious machine.

Still, I now know what the keyboard is for on the compter - to exercise my frozen fingers after a 34C ride on the backroads of NE Ohio! The more I type, the more feeling returns to my desensitized digits. Of course, that's a small price to pay for the pleasure of ramping it up to 70 and swinging from side to side on the curves, accelerating away from mystified motorists who are probably unable to fathom the reason why a leather-clad crazy guy would want to be out in ball-numbingly cold weather.

Oh, how little they know!

Siggy

As I tell my students, no matter how stupid you think the question is - ASK, cause if I know the answer I must have asked it myself once!!
