I rode one twice yesterday. YES PLEASE! Sure it vibrates like, well, a Sportster, but man does it fly. It has gobs of power and handles pretty darn well for a Hardley. Start your snickering now, but I loved it and would buy one today if I could. Here is a write-up. My Newest Love

"Gobs of power" and "Sportster" have never been in such close proximity before. Ever.

Or a lawn mower, I miss the lawnmower races that used to be on TV. Was cool to see Joe Shmoe in his 66 Snapper going 60 mph around a track.

Right on both accounts! Look, just saying that by eye and feel, this bike works for me. I would add it, among many others, to my stable if I could. Cheers!!!

Are we making fun of the power on an XR1200 vs. a TBA?
A 3 second difference in the 1/4 would generally be considered "Gobs of power". But all the sportsters are faster than our Triumph 790s and 865s.

I ride a Tigger now, but yeah, this bike hauls a$$. Perhaps that is the best way to say it, and I have ridden some tricked out Thruxtons that I doubt could out run this bike in stock form. I don't do much with the science and ride strictly by feel, and the low end grunt on this bike had me grinning for hours. I don't say that about Harleys very often. I rode a few others that had me shaking my head.

I disagree, maybe on paper but in practice I know I have left a few behind over the last couple years.

I ran neck and neck with a fairly new XR for about 10 miles in S. Dakota last summer, the dude was kinda disappointed when we chatted at the rest stop. All I was trying to do was pace him, he never was able to pull away. Well, I did get ahead of him when his genuine HD goggles flew off at 104MPH and he had to stop and find them.

Apples to apples; Dollar for dollar and displacement for displacement the Triumph 865 TBA vs the Sportster 883 the Triumph wins.
But I do like the Sportsters. The Sportster is just a little too short 3+ inches shorter wheelbase than a TBA.

No question about that, OB. However, considering that the regular Sportster 1200 is rated at around 70 HP, about 15 more than the Triumph Bonneville line, AND considering the XR1200 is rated even higher at around 90 HP, and EVEN considering that the redline on any H-D isn't a high as on the Triumphs and that the H-Ds have a narrower powerband, I still can't quite understand all this talk how our Triumphs can equal the straight-line performance of the XR1200s?!
(...btw, I have to admit that just like Ryan, the XR1200 is the ONLY Harley that has peaked my interest in owning for quite some time...yep, finally a H-D that looks like it would ACTUALLY be fun to ride and is NOT just some "Ass Ornament" to be seen upon so you can "look cool to everybody else"...but then again, ANY motorcycle that even VAGUELY resembles a Street-Tracker, I've always been all for!)

Total agree with your critique, but the "ass ornament" comment is a slam on those that are "cool" and "handsome" challenged and disadvantaged. Not everyone has the advantages of riding a Triumph or have good looking parents like us.

Stock 883 Sporty 1/4 time is about 14.7 Stock 865 Speedy 1/4 time is about 14.5 All the 1200s are in the 13s.
XR1200x is about 12.5. Compared to my TBA I call that gobs of power. Like some others this is the only Harley for a long time that I have ever liked.
I don't need to do 200MPH but to me, torque is lots of fun.

Well, hell, if 12.5 in the quarter mile on a stock bike is someone's goal, don't buy an America or a Speedmaster. Pretty easy math. And then they can go sh!t on our bikes on a Harley site. Because they won't be welcome here.

Yeah, no worries. If I had a choice between getting my blue 904cc TBA back and this bike, I would absolutely go with the TBA. I mean for goodness sake, Wojo and Yota have both been on that bike, so it is immortal to me. I am just saying that I would like to have both. The bikes are not similar, and both are fun. Cheers.

No Ron, only you, as usual. You can't miss an opportunity to belittle the TBA. I simply made the joke that a sportster, in general, is not a fast bike. Didn't set any parameters or make any other claims with regards to any other bikes. I guess I forgot smiley faces to indicate I was being sarcastic.
Yes, we get it, the TBA is slow compared to anything except maybe a bone stock 883 Sportster. Only an idiot would compare a 1200cc AnyBike (least of all a factory hot rod like the XR1200) to a stock TBA in any non-ironic manner. Any other variances on this fact are due solely to either modified TBAs or inexperience on the part of the Sportster rider. You win. Enjoy your Victory (pun intended).
Oh sh!t, I almost forgot:

John, I followed up on Dwight's post who also thought guys were comparing the TBA to the Sportster. I thought Ryan made a very good post. Its a fun bike. I own a TBA and several other bikes. I have posted with regularity that my TBA is not for sale. (meaning it is very special to me) The other bikes section will surely bring in other opinions. Your R3 gets a whole lot more press here than any other bike so you enjoy your non-TBA bike as well.

I too rode one of the XR1200s at a HD open house. None of the leather pirates in attendance would even look at it, haha.I was very impressed with the power of this bike. I thought the dealer was gonna s h i t when I ask to ride it. He was basically begging me to take her home. Two problems prevented that from happening, one my accountant ( the other half ) and two the bike was that ugly ass HD Orange!

Do I like this motorcycle? Yes. Around here Harley Davidson enthusiasts hate it. Including my brother in law who owns a Sportster. But I have to ask myself...is Harley marketing this bike as a sport bike or cruiser? Can't have both. I think its suffering from an identity crisis. And where's the original orange and black paint scheme this bike is based on? I recently rode one of these. It felt tall and wouldn't handle like a sport bike. But excelleration was all good. Not like a GSX-R, SV650 or even my 70 Commando. But it had more power than my TBA which has all kinds of upgrades. Oh..and I scraped the pipes on the HD. Just like my TBA. Which sits 5 inches lower. I would buy one. After a Street Triple and Scrambler. In my opinion I still think this is HDs best offering. Definately better than some of their 700lb plus bohemoths.

I bet the 1200x still snorts snot on yer right leg. Er blows oil past the feminine napkin in the ham can out onto your right leg. No thanks. HD's are pieces of ******. Backasswards too. My 100th anniversary edition hugger was supposed to special no? 100th ANNIVERSARY edition after all! Well for 2004 the harley folks fixed the clutch lever issue. They rubber mounted the motor and made the throttle sleeve a smaller diameter. Perhaps the wonderful thing they did for the Anniversary editions was to engineer a part that was not doomed to vibrate off: the tank badges were changed to decals.

Me too, kinda. Years ago I'd agree 100%. (these AND the V-rods) But NOW, they have some REALLY SWEET 1200's, of varying models, in ADDITION to these. Twisted, I know!
