I am looking at a comagination headlight modulator and they have two models for H4 lamps, 75 watts or less and 115 watts or less for the same price, which got me thinking about headlamp wattage. Anyone run higher wattage H4s? And if so, it there any down side? Can the stock alternator handle a higher wattage headlamp?

I also see PIAA H4 lamps that claim to produce nearly twice the light for the same draw as a stock 60/55 H4 lamp. Any downside to these besides cost?

And finally is there any reason not to go for the higher watt comagination modulator "just in case" you might want a higher watt headlamp?

I ran a 100 watt headlight for a few months but the bulb started to ruin the reflector in my headlight. Too much heat. There was no problem with the alternator handling the extra power.

I currently run a premium Sylvania H4 bult (60 watt) and 2 50 watt aux lights. At idle it doesn't have enough oumph but anywhere above idle it charges fine.

I believe you need to be concerned with TOO MUCH power running through too thin of a wire. (to thin for the extra wattage)?

That's a good thought and I think that and gregger's warning that "a 100 watt headlight...bulb started to ruin the reflector in my headlight" are enough to make me stick with the stock wattage, but I did buy a couple of PIAA GT-X lamps on flea-bay last night that are supposed to have more useable light output at the same 60 watt draw.

BTW, comagination sales recommended the 115 watt modulator for a Triumph America; they also said the 75 watt unit is $10 less even though their web site had them both listed at $69.95.
