So, I'm going to be traveling this year (unfortunately) by plane and I'm looking for a backpack that I can also use when motorcycling (either wearing it or strapping it to the sissybar). I want to be able to take my CPAP and my laptop in this one backpack pack as carry-on so I can be sure I won't be separated from my machine. And because I want to use it motorcycling I want it to be waterproof. I was surfing the Aerostich site, where I got my waterproof duffle bag, and I'm intrigued by the Kriega stuff and the Ortlieb (same brand as my duffle) stuff. Kriega Ortlieb Any reviews or opinions? Yes, they're pricey but I'm willing to pay for quality. I would lean towards the Ort due to my satisfaction with my duffle, but I like the size choices and modularity of the Kriega. The size would be dictated by the size of my CPAP combined with my 13" laptop (and power supply and mouse).

It's not waterproof but the OGIO Mastermind is a really nice computer/overnight backpack.
The Advrider guys really promote that Kriega stuff as waterproof and practical.

If it's going to spend a lot of time on your back, the bigger Kriega looks really nice. And with this in the decsription: "Strapping this baby on and clicking it into place will make you feel like Steve Canyon", it's gotta be good.

Mike Nomad and Steve Canyon, one of, if not, the longest running newspaper comic strips, ever. Mike Nomad and Steve Canyon were uber Macho dudes.

I'm losing it, Steve Canyon evolved from Terry and the Pirates (I think)Nomad was teamed up with Steve Roper, mea culpa, Canyon was a fighter pilot, once again, IIRC

How big is your CPAP? About the size of a helmet?

I like this one but you may have trouble getting on a plane.

Oh sure I'll just buy a new one. ::sigh:: My old BiPAP was huge. I've got at least 2.5 years before my insurance will buy a new one.

John, I'm in the market for a new backpack too. I found this review http://www.best-backpack-guide.com/motorcycle-backpack.htmlHas some options for your laptop. The write up doesn't include Kriega which I have to say is becoming my first choice. Like the add on packs. Here is a review link. http://www.kriega.us/motorcycle-backpack-reviews/I don't have a true review for you but figured I'd pitch in. What are your thoughts? Brett

At this point I'm planning on measuring my CPAP bag and my laptop and buying the smallest Kriega that will carry them, then maybe an add-on bag or two to carry misc other stuff. The CPAP bag holds all the headgear and stuff that goes with it and carries each half of the machine side-by-side (roughly the same dimensions as my laptop).

I bet you could fit it into one of those add on packs. Since you won't be taking it everywhere you go. I noticed most of the riders were on sport bikes. Think the Kriega would hit our rear fender?

I know Triumph just came out with a new backpack that has a space for helmets. (They have such wonderfully vague descriptions of their stuff.) I don't know if it has a laptop compartment. From the pictures it looks like it does.

Good question. I don't think the fender is the issue but the back seat or my Corbin backrest. But I don't have a backrest on the Rocket (yet) but I might bungee it to the back seat when I ride and wearing it when not. Looks like the bigger bags, the R30 and R35, might sag down low enough to be a problem.
I'm still looking. There are reviews of various bags on YouTube so I've fallen down THAT rathole today...

Haha. Well let me know what you think. I like the R25 one. Looks like a good size for me with an add on later on for traveling. Maybe I'll have to watch some YouTube vids.

The decision now is whether I buy the R25 for my CPAP and the US10 for the laptop, or just buy the R35 to fit both of them in one bag. I'm leaning toward the former.

I think that R35 is pretty bulky looking for everyday use. I use my backpack literally everyday. I do think the add on feature is cool. I called my local genius and he said the Alpinestar ones were nice. Just to muddy the water a little for you

Bryn, wow, that's a great round up, thanks!
Brett, I don't see it. I see a couple 20s and a 30 (which isn't much of a deal).

Dang it is a 20. Sorry. And you're right the 30 isn't a deal at all. That was a nice write up and review, I concur. The Kriega seem to be closely monitored I can't find them on amazon and of course no local dealers. But the bags of sugar helps get an idea of how big they are.

I checked Amazon too and I'm really surprised they don't even have an affiliate selling through their site. Kooky. But everyone seems to love them. No matter how I slice it, though, it will be well over $200. Yikes!

I have the R25 and it is a good pack. Not waterproof but water resistant. If riding in the rain, I would get the additional dry bags. It does lock down on your body with the front latch mechanism so I have had no feeling of it flopping around on my back at speed or turns. It looks a little like you are going off into battle with the buckles and front latch but highly functional. It will hold a laptop and expands pretty well. Not many pockets, so little things end up at the bottom of the bag. Overall a good bag, pricy but if you need the space and its not available on your bike, it will work well and feel secure on you.

Can you elaborate on your experience with water proof vs. water resistant? The way I read all the reviews and descriptions it's supposed to be water proof.

I have a RevPack and I love it. I use one of the Tour Pack ones and they use no space and you can stuff quite a bit into them. Not zactly a backpack but nice. I also have one of the Triumph Rucksacks, and they are a little better then useless.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Ok FJ. I received the Kriega R25 rucksack on Monday. I will start my review. Good time in delivery as expected. I haven't got to ride with it yet but first impression is high quality with a nice transfer of weight off of the shoulders to be more comfortable for long rides. Id have to say the 25 size is good for daily use but if I was to go away for the weekend on Fergie I'd like I have the 10L add on pack for extras. I didn't like the 35 pack for the front clasp. Speaking of my wife instantly laughed at me and said you look ridiculous send it back. Looks like you're wearing a parachute. Which I agree and secretly think is pretty cool. But it's more functional than anything so no hopes of getting the fairer sex. So no bar hoppIng with this apparatus strapped to you. I'll keep you posted as I ride. I'd say Kriega makes a quality product do even looking at saddle bags etc you'd make a good investment with them. Speaking of Micheal was a good guy I ordered thru at Kriega. Said he rides with a R25 everyday. And said cheers instead of goodbye so all was jolly good

How big are you and how do the straps fit you? My only real concern is being able to clip the two front clasps around my bulbous body.

I'm 5'10" 190. Straps fit me fine. I have them on about as tight as they go so I'd say there is a lot of room in there for the more well fed riders. I'll play with it some more and maybe try to take a pic so you can get an idea of how much space you will have.

I may have an older version. I got mine about 3 years ago and I would swear they told me water resistant and there was recommended water proof bags you could buy to fully protect electronics and such. I have not ridden with it in the rain but the zippers to not appear to have any water proofing. I think aside from a downpour it would be okay but untested at this point.
