Not really the same, that wing is a rolling sofa and the Beemer is much more a sport tourer. Then again, I pulled up next to a guy on one of the new 1600 six bangers during Octoberfest and he was very happy with his new ride. He did say he also had a Connie, too, and couldn't quite decide which one he liked best. That big six sure looked and sounded cool.

I can't speak about the new bikes but the parts for my 72 have been as dear as OEM Triumph stuff. That and the initial price of membership is pretty high.

I looked at one of those when I was shopping for my first bike and ended up with my TBA. It was a Montana model and was the only other bike I felt even a little comfortable on. But a used BMW for over $12k vs. a brand new Triumph for $8k, well, you know where that went.

On the other hand they'll typically run 100k miles before you really have to do anything except regular maintenance to them. And they have awesome dealership availability and user groups. That anonymous book from bmwoa is a traveler's get out of jail free card.

Not to be argumentative, but those "regular maintenance" costs can add up. My oberservations are based solely on my friend's new R1200 RT.
He's lucky to be getting 6,000 miles on a set of tires. They are toast at that point! Plus, he carries around a quart of oil to top it off as needed. What's up with that?
He loves the bike, but the way we rack up miles I'll stick with my Visions.

The Vision is a great bike. I don't see how the brand of bike affects tire wear, though. Seems like that's purely a rider and brand of tire thing. Can't speak to the oil issue, either, but most of those cats are Rotella types and it's dirt cheap.

My Visions get about 10,000 miles on the Dunlop E3 tires that get ridden hard on twisties with a 2-up travelling load. I've heard of solo riders nursing 15,000 miles or more!
I'm guessing an R1200RT uses a very soft stock tire composition for better handling - not sure what brand.
Still, for me that would basically be a new set of rubber for every long road trip. Ouch!

That's really good for such a heavy bike. I get similar mileage out of Avon Venom tires on the America.

Kevin, just a guess as to the oil consumption on your friend's R1200RT.
When he parks his bike, does he always use the center stand? 'Cause, as maybe you know, if one primarily uses their side stand on a Boxer-engined motorcycle, oil is prone to seep past the piston rings and into the combustion chamber on the left-side cylinder while the bike is stationary and not running and leaned over in that direction for any length of time.
Btw, I know I've stated the following before around here, but when Thanassis let me ride his older '96 R1100RT around Europe a few years ago, I didn't have a single problem with his bike at all during that 5,000 mile ride. It didn't use a drop of oil at all, and the more I rode that baby the more I was impressed with it.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

That happened with my old GL. Not enough to cause the oil level to drop noticeably between changes, but enough to cause a puff of smoke at start-up.

That's exactly how the RT seems to be losing oil, through puffs of smoke while it's running.

I guess you tour just fine on one of of those. They appear to be more of a comparison to the ST1300 though. A drawn in fairing and upright peg position with an adventure type saddle is why the Wing riders are wing riders. Ask the pillion rider which one they want lol. They are not the same bikes. There is also a huge displacement difference.

...I don't care for the GW. I find the seating position very cramped, not enough leg room. Other than that, the GW is a world-class tourer.

I have to say my 64 R50 doesn't cost me anything to maintain. I just put gas in , change the oil, and put tires on it and ride. Nothing breaks, although it wasn't running right last summer, I think I need a new set of points.

ONe thimg I have to say about Beemers is they are an engineers bike, so Many gadgets, whistles, dials & knobs to fool with. Which to me just sounds like more expensive stuff to break.

Yeah Ian! How DO you keep all those bells and whistles in working order on that '64 R50/2 of yours anyway??? (...sorry Mike, I couldn't resist...I'm hopin' Ian will get a kick out of this one if he sees it!)

They are very German, that's for sure. One thing I've learned about mine is how automotive the engineering is: the oil pan drops just like a car, the dry clutch and totally separate transmission, drive shaft and universal joints. And I think it will be low monetary input, once I get it moved from the bent frame to its new straight home. Of course, it's 40 years old so that might not reflect newer BMW pricing.

As you already know Dwight mine is the ultimate in simplicity. There is only 1 chain in the whole bike, I wonder who will know where that chain is.

There is a tiny roller type chain in the throttle that pulls the cables.

It's so cool that that '37 prototype was found and restored. It really stands out as a piece from the art deco days which I really like.
