When I sent my heads to a machine shop 3 yrs ago to have them port and polished, I noticed that the intake and exhaust where machined the same. Both had a swirl pattern. My question is - where's the polish? was one of these supposed to be smooth?

The exhaust should technically be as smooth as possible so it can flow easily

Any chance you can contact the shop and see if they will redo it?

regardless, it's still gonna be way better than the stock casting, so don't feel too bad about it

Im curious what brought it up tho... was it a performance thing, was it noticed by someone, did it come up in conversations, etc...

Performance is fine. I'm not sure why it has taken me 3 years to ask about it. I just assumed the shop knew what they were doing since they have done bikes for others on this site. I should have chimed in as soon as I got the heads back. Sometimes I do things right away.....and sometimes I wait three years.

Hey Tom,
When I did mine I had the machine shop do a basic port and polish as he called it. Basic meant to skillfully use his special long Dremmel like tool and grind all the unevenness that was in the original metal cast. They were pretty rough from the factory. The intakes were a little rougher then the exhaust when he was done, but it was a huge difference from stock. They have been working out just fine and dandy thank you very much.
You can go all NASCAR and have them flow tested too if you really want. But all in all, I ended up with a fine running motor. If I spent tons more for a more expensive job would it have better? Eeh, I bet I could not tell the difference at that point.
I guess my point is that any cleaning out of the ports is better then stock.

I sent it to the shop where Dinqua had his done in western New York. I think it was "Sealy Machine." I have to agree with Pat - the price was reasonable and they did good work. I was just confused about the "polishing" when I didn't see anything that looked polished. I put the BB kit in at the same time so I don't know how much of the improvement was due to the head work but I'm sure it was enough to warrent having it done. Just like other people - I'm always looking for ways to squeeze a few more ponies out of the bike.

The intake should not be smooth, you need that swirl to create turbulence to get the best a/f mix to get a good burn.

According to Jerry Branch, a mirror polish doesn't give any extra performance.
But the customers expect it, so all Branch heads get a mirror polish.
