A craigslist ad

Here

Just seems odd to want to sell used consignment bikes. I would think it would detract from new ones.

A lot of smaller dealers will sell on consignment, they just don't advertise it.

Had no idea. I always thought the bikes lined up in front of the dealer were their bikes.

My dealer hardly ever takes bikes in on trade, but will gladly put your bike up for sale on consignment. It works out great for the seller. They don't have to advertise, worry about being at home to show it and have and will get a better chance of selling it at a motorcycle shop that on their own. It's good for the shop too since they don't have to do much but sell the bike and will get a commission of the sale.

Bikes on consignment don't detract from new bike sales. Actually, a lot of the time it's the other way around, having the used bikes will sometimes lead to a sale of a new bike.

A buddy of mine told me that St. Augustine Harley Davidson closed. It's right on the way to Daytona. Lots of motorcycle traffic. Apparently a ton of HD dealers closed in the past year. We lost one in western North Carolina, too.

Dealers are franchisees and the manufacturer, or their representative, are franchisors. Entirely too many decisions that greatly affect dealers are made by people who have never been dealers and who are not personally affected by those decisions. Requirements for remodels, fees, equipment etc than can take the profit out of a business even if they sell a lot of product. The vast majority of times these requirements are only necessary to meet some company bureaucrats template and do nothing to increase the dealers sales, profit or service level but are very expensive and can cause a going concern to go belly up.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

It's about branding. Like MacDonald s , where ever you go in the USA you get the same product and experience. I know the electrician who's company did the work on the HD dealership"s "new" facility north of the river in KC. The lighting fixtures in the showroom had to be approved by HD.

That is no joke right there! A buddy of mine over here brought his Street Glide with him for this tour and told me he was paying $350 for his oil changes back in the states. I was freaking floored. I told him to show up with the bike and a six pack of Guinness and I would show him at a much cheaper rate!! It's crazy!!

They moved to Boerne and as usual sell bikes as a hobby while they fix cars in the repair bays.

I wouldn't let them fix my go cart let alone my Triumph.

The St. Augustine HD dealer was owned by Bruce Rossmeyer group. Not sure it closed or not, but they also own the Daytona HD, New Symrna HD, Destination Daytona HD in Ormond Beach and 4 or 5 more HD dealerships. Maybe they are consolidating.

I was in the Sturgis area when Bruce died in 2009. He also owned (at that time) the Rapid City, SD HD dealership, and he had a big tent in downtown Sturgis selling bikes.

Local Harley-Davidson store to close

Posted: January 17, 2012 - 10:55pm
By MARCIA LANE

marcia.lane@staugustine.com

Harley-Davidson of St. Augustine on State Road 16 will be closing its dealership at the end of this month, owners announced Tuesday.

The nation’s economic downturn played into the decision.

Co-owners Clark Vitulli and Allen Good purchased Harley-Davidson of St Augustine in August 2007.

“It’s a difficult thing to have to do, but we’re doing it with Harley-Davidson, which is a good thing,” Vitulli said. “They are closing … not only the store, but they’re not reappointing another dealership here.”

The last day the store is officially Harley-Davidson is Jan. 31.

Vitulli said the store would be open probably a couple more months after that.

“We have products we need to sell, but we won’t be selling new Harley-Davidsons and will no longer be a dealership,” he said. He praised the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, saying they have been “gracious” to work with.

Over the past several years, Harley-Davidson has had a program to work with dealers to reduce the number of U.S. dealer points, given lower overall sales volumes resulting from the economic downtown, according to a press release.

“The decision to close was a tough one since many of our employees and customers are considered close friends,” Good said. “We’ve had several offers to acquire the dealership over the years; however, after careful review of the cumulative effect the economy has had on the business, we decided to participate in Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s U.S. dealer consolidation program.”

The Harley-Davidson retail store on St. George Street in downtown St. Augustine is expected to remain open, selling clothing and general merchandise under the management of another Harley dealership, Vitulli said.

Adamec Harley-Davidson in Jacksonville will service VIP customers who purchased a prepaid maintenance package and serve as redemption sites for gift certificates, he said.

The local dealership sold more than 1,300 motorcycles in addition to providing service, parts, bike rentals and motorclothes.

Harley-Davidson of St. Augustine was awarded DealerNews’ “Top 100 Dealer in the U.S.” recognition, the only HD dealer in Florida to have been awarded the recognition for the last four consecutive years. The local company received The St. Augustine Record’s “Best Of” award for top motorcycle dealership for St. Augustine each year as well.

“We’re proud of our employees and their accomplishments,” Vitulli said.

The dealership has supported a number of local charities including Wounded Warriors, Special Olympics, Buddy Check 12 for Breast Cancer, Humane Society, Juvenile Diabetes Relief Fund and Think Pink Ride for Breast Cancer, Vitulli said. They also had a very active HOG (Harley Owners Group) chapter that promoted rides and special events for members.

Vitulli and Good own several other HD dealerships in the country, so I'm guessing that H-D's "dealer consolidation program" was lucrative. It did bother me that Rossmeyer's daughter closed her Triumph/Ducati dealership in Destination Daytona a few years back. They seemed like good folks and it was a nice contrast to all of Rossmeyer's HD emphasis.
