So, Laurie and I are on vacation in Southern California. Yesterday, we ran up to L.A. to the Getty Center. They have a big museum there. There was a special exhibit of Los Angeles area artists that did modern art from the 50's through the 80's. Most of the paintings were simple geometric shapes on a canvas. One was a single black line across the bottom of the canvas.

I don't consider myself an artist, but after seeing some of the stuff yesterday, I'm starting to maybe change my mind, even though most of the "art" that I do is done with a computer.

It got me thinking, what qualifies someone as an artist? What qualifies something as art?

Art is very subjective, anything that someone looks at and likes IE painting, drawings sculptures and the like is art! put it on nice canvas fram it well or not and there ya have it. I think the only difference between many of the "artists" out there today is their willingness to put their stuff out there for the mass's to see.

What qualifies something as art?

I think on the most basic level, it starts with an emotional response.

Took this right from wikipedia haha

Traditionally, the term art was used to refer to any skill or mastery. This conception changed during the Romantic period, when art came to be seen as "a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science". Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions.

I guess a single black line got some reaction and thus can be classified as art. Even though it is still Sh!t

Yes, A series red x in little box. I personaly subscribe to the first meaning given by Vroom. An art is about skill and mastery of your craft. This modern art crap is a haox, a bad joke played on wannabe intellectuals. Even abstraction can be artful a master craft if ya will. Design, color, balance, form, brush control. If ya think about it like a great pinstripe job. Not that it has to be, but the concept.

Ya know, they once asked serial killer and painter of clowns, John Wayne Gacy, this same question while he was on his way to the gas chamber, and his reply was...."Art? It's all in the execution!"

(...sorry, I couldn't resist that one)

For me the definition of art is simple:

If I can do it, it's not art.

I suppose I could throw a pile of crap at sheet of plywood and hang it on the wall, but I wouldn't be fooling anyone or myself.

The "art" is persuading people that your crap is worth their money.

Even bad art is still art.

Ya know a few years back I heard about the National Arts Foundation giving a hugh $$$ grant to some "rising artist" for and "artwork" similar to what eighteen98 suggested here.
Maybe we are all "artists"

Following a particularly bad display of football a reporter asked Lou Holtz what he thought of his team's execution. He responded, "I'm in favor of it."

My old riding buddy has a couple of 6'5", gay (not that there is anything wrong with that) cousins with an art gallery in San Fran. They sell broken bicycles pieces, lawn ornaments and other various garbage items for tens of thousand of dollars apiece.

I'm thinking of becoming a gay art galley owner (not that there is anything wrong with that).

They are actually a couple of very entertaining (and painfully smart) people that I find to be a lot of fun.

I agree with the traditional classification of an art as being a skill or mastery of a craft.
I think of the arts as drawing , painting , story telling , dancing , playing an instrument , acting etc. basically for your own pleasure and the enjoyment of others .
Most people are caught up in making a living and don't take the time to address the artist in themselves because we tend to put a dollar value on all things and have forgotten the fun factor.
Once money comes into it we tend to feel ripped off if we aren't "Getting our money's worth" which is only natural seeing as we are geared to think .... object = dollar value
Alot of the rubbish out there (as perceived by some) will by comparison make the better stuff shine brighter.

I have no talent when it comes to art but in my opinion whoever designed this engine did a beautiful job. A working sculpture:

Now that is another question altogether. "When does industrial design become art"?? Maybe when it is standing still it's art and when it's rocketing down the road at 140 KMH its design.

I saw an exhibit of photo's that were really cool patterns of white cracked & pitted with black. took me a few minutes to realized it was pictures of lines on the road, shot really close up. So art is whatever you can appreciate. would you consider what I do art? gurdys metal works
Your graphic art is far beyond my reach.
Also remember the earth without art is just eh

A thing of beauty for sure but also it drips, heratige, almost a patriotic symbolism of a once great country's still very strong engineering background. It's not just a bike it's a Triumph.

It's beauty is more than its appearance I guess I what I'm saying it almost stands for something.

A long time ago a painter made portraits. The more realistic the better the artist. Then photgraphy was introduced and artists didnt know what to do with themselves. This drove artists to think outside the box and redefine what art was. A long time ago a black splotch on a white background would blow peoples minds on trying to define it. Today its not so much a mystery.

The fact that you "create" can make you an artist. Whether what you create is any good, is a different story.

(...but, of course, you forgot to mention that "art" is ALSO any movie with Christopher Walken in it!)

Now realistic portraits are called "illustration." Actually, pretty much anything made for commercial purposes (which is almost everything) is called illustration. Anything else is called "fine art."
