OK. We've had plenty of posts about single malt Scotch etc., but never much about blends.
Blended does not mean inferior. There is an art to blending whisky to achieve a particular balance and some are very good. There's a reason most Scotch drinkers like Johnny Walker Black Label.
So to the point; I recently tried (and then bought, and am enjoying right now) The Famous Grouse blended Scotch whisky.
For my birthday my kids bought me a bottle of Johnny Walker Double Black, also quite good with a distinct smokey flavor that lingers on the palate. Smoooooth too.

Any one who dismisses blends, should try Johnny Walker Blue Label. It is a blend but of their rarest whiskeys and consistently is near perfect.

I'm not a very sophisticated whiskey drinker, have always drank pretty much Jack or Beam with ice or water. You guys might probably know, but aren't all Canadian whiskeys blended? Most I've ever tried taste like perfume to me, but maybe my palate is just burned out on sour mash. I'll have to try your recommendations over the holidays, thanks.

Johnny green is pretty good too - and a fair bit more affordable than the blue or gold....I tend towards the single malts, but if I want a blend, green never disappoints.
...you're gonna feel a little pressure....

One of the few benefits of flying a lot for work; when I fly on my own dime (for example tonight I am flying coach back to the UK), I get to use the British Airways first class lounge - which includes "help yourself" Johnny Blue. You can be assured, I will be ensuring it is up to it's usual standard latter.

Over the past summer, a few of the scottish highland games were giving free shots of The Famous Grouse black label - blended scotch whisky. It is pretty decent.....well for a blended haha

Never really developed a palate for Scotch. I may have to give it another try. As for bourbons I prefer the wheat bourbons, such as Makers Mark or Wellers. Elijah Craig is a good bourbon at the price point. Jim Beam and Jack Daniels are really good for cleaning engine parts.

I have found that Pendelton whisky out of Oregon is very good, and reasonably priced.

I don't turn down a nice Scotch whisky but prefer Irish whiskey and some of the American and Canadian whiskies. If you like bourbon or rye, you might try Bulleit. http://www.bulleitbourbon.com/If you're really dedicated you don't want to miss Whiskyfest... http://www.maltadvocate.com/whiskyfest.asp

Wow Ed! So one can get Crown Royal in a handy-dandy 5 gallon drum TOO, huh?! (...sorry, I just couldn't resist mentioning how big that picture is!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I had a good blended Thanksgiving. John Dewars signature series 30 year.

I think your point is a good one here, Bill. Yep, there are some very good Blends which are very smooth. I believe that's the major reason for blending them. However, the reason I much prefer the Single Malts is because of all the different and distinct aromas and flavors each of the Single Malts seem to offer up a little more, depending upon its local distilling and aging process. It's sort of like how the better Cabernet wines are also more complex to the palate. Speakin' o' which, wasn't that Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old Whisky that Mike brought to the SWTF last year some goooooooood stuff!

Touche, Colin!
BUT ya see, the difference HERE is that American Whiskey has a distinctly different flavor and sometimes color(notice the absence of the superfluous "u" in those words "flavor" and "color" here, if you will!) than that of Scotch Whisky! Whereas, the words "flavor" and "color" mean the exact same things to both you guys over there AND to us Yanks!!!

Oh yeah, a good single malt like the one you mentioned is a delight, something to be savored as a special treat.
(Some single malts that I have tried, you can keep , though hey, one man's poison, etc. )

Had a generous portion of 8 Seconds blended whiskey this evening. Good stuff. Usually I drink plain old Crown or Pendleton.

Good Scotch, Rye, Rum or Bourbon blended or single malt they all have their own distinct attributes. One province Nova Scotia is allowing small distillers to sell from their own on site shop. In Lunnenburg the Ironworks distillery is putting out a fine whiskey.

Nothing says to me you are in your home town like the smell of the mash eminating from the Walker Distillery in Windsor Ontario. That is one sweet smell a forecask of good things to come.

Okay Al! If I'm readin' ya correctly here, you were attempting to say that you're "FOND" of the Grouse brand of whisky, right?! NOT "found" of that brand, right?!
Okay, once again...so NOW do you folks out there who spell certain words usin' that superfluous "u" see what can happen when that whole thing gets out o' hand???!!!

Yep! But, I've always gotten the impression those folks would make pretty good neighbours...err...NEIGHBORS!!! (...especially if they'd happen by the house with a bottle of good single malt!)

This is the sort of thing which happens when you leave out letters from words -overheard many years ago when listening to the conversation of two Scottish/English border farmers discussing a potential sale in the market.
'Ool? 'Ai ‘a ‘ool ‘A ‘eal ‘ool? 'Ai, ‘a ‘eal ‘ool 'A 'un 'eal 'ool? 'Ai 'a 'un 'eal 'ool
