Just because I know it annoys people, I finally started the next phase of my home remodel, I ordered a new shower. I'm replacing my tub and surround with a wider walk-in shower, adding a second shower head, and moving the toilet over a few inches. Unfortunately the shower unit has been delayed. I talked to the folks at Lowes this morning and the delivery date was moved back a week and no one told me. I'm sure glad I called them before my contractor showed up tomorrow morning...

I don't as a general rule. But I asked my realtor friend about resale value if I have just one bathroom and no tub and she said I should have a bench or something. She literally said 'to make it easier for women to shave their legs in the shower.' And the high-capacity bench wasn't much more than, say, a 200pounder. Actually, most of the time I'll probably leave it in the hall closet.

After our sub would pull in from a deployment, it was SOP to drag a chair, a cold beer (or 3) and just go sit in the shower back in the barracks. Nothing like taking a real long shower after weeks/months of navy showers.

The shower looks good, plenty of shelves. And the seat is a good idea if you ever get laid up a little. Toilet is a toilet, as long as you get one of the "taller" ones, 17" or more. They are so much more comfortable for adults. I'll bet I have replaced at leat 30 old fashioned short toilets for taller ones in the last two years as part of my remodels. Can't imagine why the old ones were so darn short, except for kids.

Oddly enough, the best thing about that toilet is the flat sides. I really hate cleaning toilets.

Shower looks good. my daughter with her 2 young kids has an older unit with no seat and is praying for a tub. oh well!

Friar John, how do you like the tankless heater?
cheaper?
did you get the condensing unit,94% or the 84% unit?
helped my son install one last month and he loves it.

It's a bit cheaper but takes a bit longer for the hot water to flow. Of course, once it does it will flow forever and you get used to the extra lag time. Mine is a 98% Condensing unit from Rinnai, and it's overkill for my house, but I wanted to make sure I could shower with the dishwasher (and perhaps the clothes washer) running at the same time. I'm considering an insta-hot tap for my kitchen sink when I remodel that room. It's a pain to wait half a minute or so to rinse off a utensil.

Yeah, yeah, "First World problems."

P.S. As far as a tub and kids go, my house really isn't family friendly. It's a 2br/1ba with a huge garage and dog run. Everything I'm doing to it screams bachelor/bachelorette/biker/sportsman pad. Of course that person could be a single parent but they can always replace the shower with a tub if they have to. Let'em try to negotiate with me over that, IF I ever decide I need to sell it.

You will have to build a stage. That's where they are usually installed.

The contractor started today, ripping out the vanity and stuff. When I went home at lunch they were just starting on the old tub and surround. By the end of today the plan is to have the subflooring fixed. Tomorrow the shower goes in and the plumber does his thing (move drain, move toilet, add second showerhead. They want to do Tile on Thursday-Friday.

I picked up the shower and toilet from Lowes yesterday, as well as the showerhead/control/valve kits. Ordered my vanity, sink and faucet online today. The vanity won't ship until the 20th of January so this just turned into a month-long project. My biggest conundrum is tile. I have peculiar, if not expensive tastes. So I'll probably be ordering tile for above the shower from a local shop and buying something that's in-stock from Lowes this week so they can get the floor done and install the toilet. Basically it will be a dark copy stone looking floor with white tile above the shower, but I have an idea about the tile sizes that I need to confirm with my contractor. Lastly, still need to pick up a new light fixture and the new medicine cabinet so they can recess it for me.

OK, my turn. Here's a few pics from my recent remodel of our bathroom. There was a clawfoot tub in there before. I hated it. The plumbing came up through the floor where the bench is. All the tile, except for the design on the outside, was free as it was sitting in the garage of a rental house I bought. I did every bit of work on it myself.

https://picasaweb.google.com/109059948055984542419/BathroomRemodel#slideshow/5691197188535909394

As I already had the tile saw and the tile and a few leftover pieces of Hardybacker for the floor and walls, my only expenses were about $100 for shower and plumbing fittings (Sharkbite and Pex), about $20 in additional lumber, maybe $50 in grout and mastic, and the little design thingy on the outside was $100. It was an impulse buy when I was picking up more grout. Plus, a few things like plastic for the shower pan, etc.
The bathroom is off our bedroom which had a fireplace converted to propane with a remote. It's nothing fancy but it's the house I always wanted. My driveway is 4 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Where I live a cabin like mine is still pretty affordable, though my son and I had to do a lot of work on it when we first bought it. We enjoy that kind of thing. I'll have it paid off in a few years. I laugh when I hear friends that live in places like NYC say how they couldn't give up their 'quality of life' in the city.

Now that I think of it, it seems like a pretty good place to write my OWN manifesto...

It says page not found on that link. I'd like to see.

Today they finished the subflooring, put the shower in (the surround isn't fastened yet), and did all the plumbing work. I bought floor tile and ordered tile for above the shower. The sink and faucet have shipped. Tomorrow the dark copper tile goes in on the floor. By the end of the day the shower should be done and functional, and possibly the toilet installed (or early tomorrow at the latest). No more peeing at the gas station.

I'm going to mock up the vanity so we can locate the centerline for the medicine cabinet and new light fixture (which I haven't picked out much less purchased).

So, from your photos you are doing the oriental bowl sitting on the vanity look? We've done some and they are pretty cool.

I wanted to do that ('bowl' sink) but got vetoed by management. Ended up with a compact sink and vanity (the old one was too big for the space) and recycled the hardware (which was new a year ago).

Does that new URL work? Both of them worked for me but you know how that goes.

Day Three: TILE (still drying, picture soon). Tomorrow, grout, toilet and finished shower. Week after next, tile above the shower, paint and maybe recessed medicine chest. End of January, vanity, sink and faucet. Somewhere along the line, new brushed nickel goodies: light fixture, switches, outlet, towel bars, heat vent cover, etc.

It's not Asian styled, but yes it's a vessel sink. It's just white.

It's not working for me.

We have done about 5 bowl sinks. We did a double vanity with two bowls that looked like something you would serve rice in for a Vietnamese couple, who'd a thunk it. Very cool. My favorites were half baths, both had antique chest for vanities. One bowl looked like a fine china, the other crystal.

You should have put the toilet in the shower. That way you can kill two chickens with one visit.

"Shower toilet" another great idea.
