Seems that now it will be legal to slaughter horses for human consumption.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

You mean they lifted the previous ban. Don't be so small minded, it's not really a big deal. In fact, it will create new jobs and get some people some dollars in their pockets. Again, it's just meat. Not meat I'll eat, but I bet lots of people here in this country do. If you ask me, the government did a good thing for a change.

No thank you. I have lived in Japan almost 10 years and refuse to eat it as well as whale. I'll stick to beef, pork, chicken and fish...I don't need to eat every breathing thing and I'll pay respect to the animal that helped pioneer our country going out to the west coast. I've also lived in Korea and refused to eat dog as well...I'm an adventurous eater but there are some things I show respect to but that is what is great about being able to make the choice.

Originally they banned it because animal rights groups fought for it. Since then animal cruelty, and abandonment toward horses has shot up mainly because many horse owners couldn't afford to ship their animal to Canada for slaughter. Last year over 175,000 horses were shipped from the US to Canada for slaughter. Even when the US allowed the slaughter of horses most of the meat went over seas.
Just another example of people not thinking through all the consequences.
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

They have a fish in Japan called Aji and is served in a similar way to your lobster. They filet that sucker so fast and put it on a pair of sticks that it is still wiggling and gasping by the time it is put down in front of you at the table! I have to admit...damn thing tastes pretty awesome but it was something different to get used to...

dispite this "new" governmental de-regulation... butchering equine for human consumption has been in practice in the good ol USA in fits & starts since the 1800's. Mostly as a response to economic pressures and survival. I can remember my great grand dad & gramps stories of butchering the family's horses during hard times. I wonder if this new "legalization" is really a vanguard of things to come as our economy continues to decline?????

I can't wait for some quality cuts of horse to get into my local butcher shop. I have a great steak tartar recipe that calls to pferd (horse) tenderlion. I have made it with both beef and venison, but just not the same. and pferred pferd steaks, makes my mouth water just thinking about it, yum

When I lived in France there was a butcher and horse butcher within a block of each of other. Out of the gate I'd say they were neck and neck on the plates of the locals. As the French say "Chaque une son gout"

Hoof and Mouth disease is characterized by vesiculation, or blistering of the hooves and oral cavity. Cattle, swine, sheep, and goats are all susceptible. Seven immunologic types, over 60 subtypes and numerous strains have been identified.
The disease is enzootic in many areas of the world, including most of Asia, Africa, and South America. North and Central America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan are free of infection. It had been largely controlled by vaccination in Europe and the Scandinavian Countries. Until recently the United Kingdom was considered free of the disease. Mexico experienced an extensive outbreak between 1946 and 1953. In 1952, a small focus of infection was identified in the Saskatchewan Province, Canada, but eradication was prompt. The last outbreak of HMD in the United States was in 1929.
