This is the biggest week in his draft catagory so I think maybe escaped under the cloak of darkness to cross the border and took refuge on the roof of my car.

It's just ugly with turkeys around here that will mysteriously disappear in a day or so. Never liked wild turkey much myself. Stringy.

I read somewhere that they estimate there are less than 1300 turkeys left in the wild in the US. There are gajillions raised just for this week, of course.

1300... that's it? Interesting, and I say this because they are increasing in population in these parts at an alarming rate. We never used to see them, or at least it was rare... now take a drive or ride just about anywhere around here and it's not a surprise to run across a veritable herd, flock, gaggle (or whatever it is when it comes to turkeys) of dozens of the homely feathered fowl.

Hmmm, maybe that's why the numbers are so few in the US... they really are jumpin' the border and heading north!

The KS Wildlife & Parks report on the Spring season reports over 32K taken by hunters in the spring season, in Kansas, in 2011, alone - without check-in the numbers are done by survey but unless their methodology is faulty to the point of being corrupt the numbers can be considered to be in the ballpark.

This site put the estimate in 1999 at 5.46 million, the Wikipedia entry gives an estimate of 7 million, with a low in the 30Ks in the early 1900s.

Ha! There seems to be that many on my ride to work. The damned things are becoming as great a hazzard as deer. I hope more hunters are successful. On two occassions I have had one of these over-sized forest pigeons fly accross my path at head level while on the bike. They're hard, unpredictabl and absolutely dangerous.

For a wild turkey this one was not too nervous. There was no telephoto on the picture on the left, I was that close. Didn't want big scratches in my roof so that was the limit.

That's a long way off from the 1300 John read about. I swear they're on the increase here, and considering I live just a stone's throw from the border, they must be increasing in Washington State too.

Well, I probably shouldn't have said anything. I can't find the article I read. For all I know it was just in one state maybe. I dunno.

There are probably more than 1300 wild turkey here in the suburbs of St. Louis alone.

Or it could be that you were actually involved with one of these at the time?

I think the collective noun for turkeys might be "Freezerfull"

Oh, that can't be right. I have a hundred a week just trying to make me wreck my bike.

We used to have a St. Bernard that would chase the stupid things. My wife would try to shoo them away each morning before letting Bruno out. She'd wave her arms and yell at them...which made them all walk toward her.

No way. Not around here. The wild turkey around here travel in huge flocks of 50 or more usually. I see them on a regular basis in my yard too. One of our cats likes the taste of the slow little ones too.
Zillions of the suckers around here. I am always seeing huge flocks in my daily travels. They have really exploded in population and the hunting season has been lengthened because of their abundance.

One of them stopped by my place and is staying for dinner. Should be a good time.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
