A question was posed to me about the Triumph tanks that have the flags on them. Are they painted or decal?

I had read in Torque that they do their own pinstiping/painting and saw that the pinstriping is in fact done by hand so I was wondering if these are possibly hand painted as well or decal.

So what does a close up look of these reveal? Hand painted or decal?

Just wondering,

ed

near as i can tell, they're decals with clearcoat over them. even so, they're very sharp as is the flame tank/fender.

My dealer has a flag tank and fender, and I can't tell whether it's painted or not. He's had it in his shop for several years and can't sell it - even at the $500.00 wholesale. It does look sharp, though.

I saw it last weekend and can't remember. You could call him at Triumph of Arkansas to ask. (501) 664-2177. Bill Rush is the owner. Mention I told you about it.

All the Custom paint jobs from the factory are decals with hand painted borders then clear coated. I was goimg to get the flame paint job until I was told this. I'm no expert on the subject, but this is what I have found to be the only story so far. TR

Eddy,
CMS has one here and it's the Caspian Blue, fender also, wants the full MSRP of about $800 though.

I have the British Flag tank and fender on my "02 BA and the flag itself appears to be a decal applied over beautiful mulbury (sp) Red and ... silver, then clearcoated. You have to see one to appreciate it. There is a tank and fender on ebay now with the American flag but I haven't seen one on a bike myself. The word decal doesn't do justice to the appearance. IMO the British flag setup is a good way to highlight our bikes that are at least assembled in England.

I have one on my 2002 TBA. Looks like a very cool decal under lots of clearcoat.

I've always wanted the flame tank, but can't justify spending so much when to have a truely CUSTOM job would be the same or less.

You can get a custom paint job for less than $835?

That might get you a repaint with one color or a two-tone, if you do your own prep work. That is, unless you have a friend in the biz like I do.

A friend of a friend in Milwaukee does custom jobs...only problem is that I'd either have to send him my tank & fenders or buy new ones and have him paint them. And I wouldn't want to be without my bike for that long.

I think timing is the key. I had mine painted during the winter of '02-03 (not that I didn't miss a few riding days during that time). I'm thinking of picking up another set of tin for my next paint job, though. Mostly because I just want to leave the tin with my buddy so he can paint it at his leisure - no pressure. It's the least I can do for free custom paint.

Yeah, good point...something to keep in mind for next year.

But until then...mine is black, so no complaints there.
