I just watched 'Rent' for the first time. What a GREAT musical movie! Now let me backtrack here... I LOVE musicals. And so I am VERY interested in hearing from other musical movie (or play) fans, in terms of what their favourite musical(s) might be.

So.... I'll start.

No. 1 - Paint Your Wagon (That Clint sure could sing!)
No. 2 - Moulin Rouge (Talk about a PRODUCTION!)

But there's 'The Sound of Music,' 'Jesus Chris Superstar,' 'Hair' and SO MUCH MORE!!! What's your most memorable?

Live to love, love to live.

"Musicals", huh Keith?!

Saaaay, all that time you were gone around here, you didn't happen to visit San Francisco, did ya?!

(...okay, now that I've got that whole "musicals are gay" joke outta the way...)

Yeah, okay, MY favorite old musicals are:

No. 1 - "Singin' in the Rain"

No. 2 - "The Music Man"

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Watched Hair when it opened in Sydney in 1969. Great music and a great show-the nudity way back then really rattled the cage of the establishment at the time. Have seen the Phantom etc but Hair is still my favorite!

The Producers is good too.

I have to say... I'm a little surprised to see some of you guys throwing down with Sound of Mucus, Wizard of Blahs, and West Side Boring and the like. The musicals are much different than the movies are and some of the songs are just aweful. For example, Wizard of Blahs has this song called the Jitterbug in the musical that makes me want to shoot myself. Oh well, to each their own, right?

Wait a minute, Chris. I'm pretty sure the jitterbug number was cut from the final version of "The Wizard of Oz"!

Btw, did you know that "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was also almost cut out too?! The producers thought it "slowed down" the film.

Now in the REAL musical, the on-stage musical, it includes the jitterbug. The movie, on the other hand does not so we're both right. It would've been ashame if 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' were cut and I did hear that somewhere along the line. By the way, are we talking ON-STAGE musicals in this thread or MOVIES or BOTH

Edit: I just looked back at Keith's first entry and see are talking about both movies AND plays. On with the program...

While not a big fan I did have the opportunity to see some of the musicals named on Broadway as a kid. My Dad traveled to the Big A for business and I'd get tickets to keep me out of his hair for a few hours. Unfortunately, my sister loved them and played the albums until I was pleading for death.

Ummmm...Charlie. I don't think "Houseboat" is a musical, strictly speaking.

(...but then again, I guess I can imagine watching a 24 y/o Sophia Loren on screen would make ANYBODY break into a rousing rendition of "Bella Donna, Mi Amore", eh?!)

Nope Bill and Scott, O Brother and Blues Brothers were not musicals, but GREAT movies nevertheless. Man, what a list we have going here... it's about time to compile a list and make sure Netflix is working for this winter!!

Gotta say I'm really surprised there aren't more "Singin' in the Rain" fans here.

I mean, c'mon...some of the greatest talents of all time like Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds singin' and dancin' up a storm, great songs, Hollywood making fun of itself, romance, comedy everywhere with a great performance by Jean Hagen as the full-of-herself actress Lina Lamont, and, well...I could go on and on here.

What?! Haven't you folks ever seen this movie which is considered THE greatest musical of all time by almost every cinephile out there?! Here, watch REAL talent at work...

(...and I defy anyone who watches this movie start to finish to not have a big ol' smile plastered on their face when it's over)
