hi im wondering about this as i read a post saying speedmasters arnt bonnivilles? exact frame, height, lenth, rake etc etc. the differeces i know of are the seating position, the speedmaster has shorter gears giving more up and go and the engine is crome on the america, the service manual lists them both with the truxton and the scrambler? i am also wondering about if you can change the gearing from americas to speedmasters? this would give an america a bit more bite, also will america pegs fit onto a speedmaster frame or only the americas? happy ridding,

They are different and they also have 270º firing instead of 360º. The first America was a Bonneville America but then they changed it to just America. There are many differences.

Early BAs were 790 cc, later changed to 865. The 790s are the fast ones, with the hot cams. Uncle Charlie

Basically I think you're asking about differences between the Speedmaster and America, taking the Bonneville completely out of the equation, right? (Some confusion may be in the fact that the first year for the America it was called the 'Bonneville America.')
As for shortening the gears on the America it's just matter of changing a sprocket.

The BA and SM are basicly the same bike. The SM used to have a dual front disc and mags with a more aggressive riding position than the BA and the BA had spokes but that was back when they had the cool knee indents in the tanks too.

Depends on what you mean by "gearing" and what are you trying to accomplish. they both have always had the same transmission. For most years the Speedmaster had a smaller front sprocket that would get you off the line a little bit quicker, but you would feel like you would run out of gears sooner, making the America feel a little but better for cruising on the freeway. But, I am pretty sure the last couple years the Speedmaster and America both have the same sprockets.

Absolutely. They are the same frame.

Sorry Ian, but the 2007 BA had the mag wheels and the classic fuel tank indents.
Not only did the SM have dual front discs and the more aggresive riding position, but they also come with a tach as part of the standard kit.

I know but the cool Ba before that had spokes then it started to lose some of it's identity and got mags instead of the spokes.

I didn't know the frames were the same. I could stick a Bonneville or Scramber front end on this bike and it would work just the same? I though it had a different rake?

The title of this thread is misleading. The guy who started this was REALLY asking about differences between the America and Speedmaster, which have the same frame.

Yes , the America/SM has a steeper rake than the classic Bonnie line . And changing out the front seems excessive , all that would accomplish is a different fender and spokes , assuming it would slide into the triple clamps. The front and rear wheel configuration needs to be the same , ie. spoke/spoke or alloy/alloy or it will look crappy . Just my H.O.

I figured as much, the rake looked completely different. I was thinking of swapping for the shorter front end with the spokes and then finding another America spoked rear. New front end being triples and all as the SM triples are much wider. Excessive to say the least, just floating ideas around.

Actually Don, the Bonneville America or America is the cool one to get. After all this is Bonneville America.com for a reason. We just kinda let those speedy guys hang out here.

The Speedmaster & the Bonneville are Cousins. But if I'm talking to a non-biker, I'll often just say I have a Triumph Bonneville, many of them have heard of that. Simplify.

The frames of the America and Speedmaster are the same, but they are NOT the same as the Classic Bonneville models. The front is raked more and the seat is lower among other things on the BAs/SMs.
