Steve Jobs? He was one of my mentors, especially when I worked in the IT world. I just read he was only 56!! Wow... a true visionary is gone. May he RIP!

He said that when he was younger, he thought tech had changed the world, then he had children. Regardless of tech, the human life cycle never changes. ( paraphrase and probably badly)

He was a great innovator and capitalist.

Today is also the anniversary of Janis Joplin's death.

He certainly made my life a lot more interesting.

His drive and imagination will be missed. Hopefully he injected some of it in the current line up of people in Apple and they will continue his vision for a while longer....

Truly a brilliant man. I always felt he favored form over function a little too much but he developed quite a following. I bought a G3 iBook and spent a year trying to love it. It was an mp3 player. If you want to catalog (but not edit) photos and store your music it was great. If you wanted to edit photos, movies, or interact with, well, everything that didn't say Apple it was pretty useless. I keep it in my shop as a music source. But just recorded music. It's too slow on the net to even use it to surf down there.

I saw a show a while back where Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were interviewed together. Besides being incredibly interesting, it was also quite touching. The two of them are so intertwined. People often forget that, when Apple was about to go toes up a few years back, Microsoft infused it with cash to keep it afloat.

That wasn't altruism. That was anti-trust, as in, let's keep Apple alive so the government doesn't call us a monopoly and break us up like they did the phone company.

Oh, yeah, I think you're right. In the news the other day they said how, very briefly, Apple slipped ahead of, I think, Exxon, as the highest valued company in America and I couldn't help but think, yeah, but Microsoft owns most of it.

In 1997, when Jobs gained re-control of Apple (CEO), Apple and Microsoft entered into a deal to jointly develop Microsoft Office for Apple computers. Microsoft invested 150 million in non-voting stock. I believe today Apple is the most widely traded stock in the world and may have the highest market value.

"During 2001, the remaining 75,750 preferred shares were converted into 9.2 million shares of the Company's common stock."

I'm not sure what 9.2 million shares works out to but it's probably more than I have in my wallet.

Not a bad deal for Microsoft. Steve Jobs made a few deals in his time, like buying Lucas Films (Pixar) for $70 million and selling it for $800+ million.

Also, I've thought about it and I think Exxon is valued at about $410 billion, Apple $345 billion. IBM over took Microsoft last year for 3rd place. Of course, with a little bad luck or stupidity these numbers can change over night.

That's a bit ironic considering Microsoft's leap into the market place was when they took over IBM's DOS making it MS-DOS which became THE operating system of the PC world of the day. Or something like that...

You are right about the operating system. But, don't take my figures as gospel, they're pretty much based on articles I've read over the last year. These values can change on a dime, we forget all Apples and Steve Jobs' failures, they were 90 days away from bankruptcy in 1997.

FYI, for part of a day, Aug, 9, 2011, Apple surpassed Exxon in market value.

Actually, it was IBM they marketed MS-DOS to, after they acquired it for next to nothing from its developer, to run their new 'personal computers'.
