So here I am. Had a bottle of the Rhone Valley's best and started surfing Youtube for some tunes by the original artists that have been covered where the cover has become the best known version. So, the rules: post the original , not the cover. Got a few Snowblind Freind The Pusher Pancho and Lefty After Midnight Lots more, but these just some samples. Get after it

First one that comes to my mind here is this one, Bill... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SfkFG_rVCI&feature=related(...yep, word is some white boy covered this one a few years later, and it and him became quite popular with the kids)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

And, here's another one later done by the aforementioned "white boy" that I believe sold better than this original version... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79CJON8fv6c

Yeah! that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. Always seems somewhat better with the author singing it.
That's actually the first version on Bobbie McGee that I ever heard. Janis just never quite hit it.

And here's another: When the Levee Breaks Yep, Dwight. You got me thinking about the early Black blues origins of many of our "standards".

I think of Steppenwolf when The Pusher is mentioned, like that version best too. PusherDeclaring total war on the Pusherman didn't work out so well. Led Zepplin for When the Levee Breaks.

Speaking of Linda, her first hit, Different Drum, was performed with the Stone Ponies and written by Mike Nesmith, who would later be part of The Monkees.

She is a great artist, who didn't she cover. Motown, big orchestra torch songs, Spanish standards, Neil Young et al late 70s hippy music, cross over western.

Yeah Ian, that was the point of the thread; to listen to the original versions of some songs that aren't usually identified with the author.
Axton's original version of "The Pusher" that he wrote, for instance, has some differences from Steppenwolf's cover. A bit more explicit, and darker. Axton's curse comes from the heart, and sounds it.

Jimi Hendrix did Mr.Dylan's "All along the Watchtower" I heard Bob's version first[on "John Westly Hardin"] the Hendrix version was more famous but I like Dylan. Same with "House of the rising Sun " [The Animals] But again I like Mr.Dylans earlier [I think] version

I saw her in concert many years ago. She did the entire concert in a little red and white cheerleader outfit. I nearly died that night.

Possibly the greatest standard ever written by anyone was this one by the great Hoagy Carmichael... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IxmMT0wpaUAnd almost assuredly, the greatest cover of it ever done was this absolutely beautiful recording of it done by the great Nat King Cole... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPl6IDPTgRk&feature=related

Hey Soren, if this original version of LOUIE LOUIE had been on the radio we wouldn't have been wondering to this day what the heck was said in that song. Nah, the mystery was more fun.

Louie Louie has got to be the most covered song of all time, but, Black Flag's version is one of my favorites.

When I was a student at Indiana there was a Greek restaurant at the edge of campus. It wasn't always a Greek restaurant. Many years earlier it had been a bookstore. There was still a grand piano in the corner. It was at that grand piano, a love lorn student named Hoagy Carmichael wrote the immortal 'Stardust' after having just been dumped by his girlfriend.

Speaking of Stevie Ray Vaughn, he did a version of "Shortnin' Bread" that was AMAZING! However, I have no idea who wrote the original.

Hendrix's version of Hey Joe is better known than Billy Roberts' original version. There's an artist in Nashville named Chris Stapleton that has written songs that ended up hits for others, but not for him so much. Not sure why, I think he's badass. He used to have a bluegrass band called the SteelDrivers and now he's got a bluesy rock thing called the Jompson Brothers. And Adele is also making a hit out of one of the bluegrass songs about killing your wife. Better known than his - up to you if it's "better". SteelDrivers Adele

I am reminded of the famous Rodgers & Hammerstein original "June is busting out all over", lyrically covered by Dean Martin with "June oughta buy another dress." I understand Dwight has the 45 in his collection Hey, it sometimes passes as humour jh

Stevie Ray wouldn't have had a career if he hadn't done so many covers. I know this is a little off topic but there is not much that I like less than going to a a night club to here a band, and its the same old tired songs that I can hear on the local classic rock station.

This is a really cool thread. I knew most of the songs listed were covers but didn't know the original versions. Cudos for posting the links.
