We've got some members here that can take some pretty incredible pictures. Some of it is talent, some of it is the subject, and some of its the camera.
I've had plenty of cheap 35mm cameras and a couple of cheap digitals. Film and developing can be too expensive and time consuming for everyday use. With having kids, it seems the cheap digitals are just too slow to catch the action, or the depth and clarity is not there.
What do I need to know to get a decent camera without having to rob a bank?
Thanks
Stewart

The Nikon D80 is the fall back DSLR for those on a budget. There are a ton of them out there and many pros keeps one around as a back up camera. The D90 is the updated version. It's also easy to buy lens for. My point and shoot is a Panasonic ZS7. It's a pretty amazing little camera. Incredible lens and sensor. Also has GPS if you want that. Takes near DSLR quality photos. Woot had the ZS10 (latest version) for $199 the other day but I didn't look to see if it was a refurb or not. Panasonic has come on the photography scene in a big way in just a few years.

First you need to rob a bank..................oh, you said with OUT having to rob a bank. Sorry I know your serious but cameras are expensive. That's why I don't have a good one.

I'm no expert, or even a gifted amateur, but I find a lot of digital pictures to be flat, unless they've been taken with a really expensive camera. I use a film SLR, which I got with a load of different lenses and other goodies for £50 second hand I can go from here to here without moving I had to get a bag to carry it on the bike though

Stewart your going to find as many different opinions about camera's as you do about politics. Go on line find your price range, go to the store pic one up and see if it feels good. Some here like Nikon I like Canon and have both. A dslr with a couple of decent lenses is going to take awesome pictures, regardless of manufacture! If your not worried about macro or zoom the point and shoots take great pictures, it's all subjective.

With the current generation of sensors there is really no reason not to go digital. There are a few things a pro can do with film filters, or if you are making a billboard sized print, but as far as normal sized photo quality few pros even use film anymore.

Stew, I have this one for a nice small Canon camera to go anywhere, and paid less than the shown price I think http://www.google.com/products/catalog?c...492812731691957and took this pic with it and I also have this big Sony camera, which is now an older model and I paid way more than the shown price http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q...529070505677178and took this pic with it So really, it's all about what size you want to carry, and how much you want to spend. I use the Canon a whole lot more than the Sony because it's smaller and easier. They both take pretty good video also.
