Was looking for a good fork bag, so went to a Swap meet today knowing these things were all Harley. Anyhow, Triumph was very well represented. Lets see, how many Triumphs were there. Including me there was 1. Harleys? 500 or so. Weekend riders, Banditos, Gypsies, and 4 wheel lurkers.
Lost count but conservatively about 25 Harley riders commented on the Triumph, "nice ride" "beautiful bike" etc. etc. Dozens and dozens stopped to look at it in the rows of bikes parked there.
Just posted this to show the Harley folks don't show anything but respect for our machines. At least in Texas they don't.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I think in the motorcycle world, Triumph are pretty much the only one that get any respect from the hard core harley crowd and even more so our bikes.

Also my experience... That is how you can tell a "REAL" Harley Rider.
They all have a real soft spot in their heart for our Triumphs.

I think you're right. I think it's the weekend warrior HD riders that buy into the image and don't even KNOW what a Triumph is that trash talk.

I agree with all. Where I live, it seems like every jerk-off and his brother has a Harley. I think they buy them because they think it makes them seem cool, or tough. Wrong on both counts. I rode in a benefit ride last fall with about 1200 bikes (99% Harley). As I was leaving, I rode by 2 guys sitting on a fence next to their Hogs. One of them poked the other and said "Wow, look at that Triumph!". That's what it's all about. Charlie

Good point! I parked next to a dude on an ancient BMW at Americade last year, and he knew what the bike was, asked the milage and I said 17k and he said "holy ****** you really ride that ****** ing thing don't ya!" I really didn't think it was that impressive, but I guess most of the cruiser types he runs into don't ride that much...

You guys are hitting it right. The hard core Harley riders even the club members were the ones that treated it well. The older ones were the most appreciative. I will say, nobody had a bad word to say. The lawyer type weekend warriors were too busy posing. I also noticed the older diehard riders didnt pay the posers any mind either. I noticed in that group there is also a separation. The real riders know who the posers are and don't really socialize with them either making it apparent, just because you have a bike does not mean you are a rider.

I also get a real kick out of these "2nd Mortgage Chopper" guys that won't even speak to any other riders at the biker bars.

I believe most of our experiences are similar and frequent. I've had only one recurring exception that always pi$$es me off a bit. I have one friend that has a full dress hog - more lights than a freakin' semi (lory). He is convinced I need a real B I G scooter, something with a V-twin and tons of noise. No matter what I've said, he never seems to get it, so now I just don't say much at all. My goal is to get him to take a nice long ride with me - one that takes a full day with several stops. Its the stops that will get him - when all the fuel-stop spectators admire the Triumph, whether it be the memories, or the uniqueness, they always do. Once I see the pain on his face, I'll just say. "You really need to get rid of that truck and get a motorcycle...

I was also thinking "Retirement Fund Choppers" or "401k Choppers." I think the majority of the $30-40,000 (Big Dog, American Iron Horse, etc.) chopper buyers probably use a second mortgage, though.

Some of my Harley friends ask when I'm going to get a Fat Boy, Road King. etc. I usually reply that I won't, but if I did, I'd have to hang a mailbox on the side, because they cost so much I'd have to live in/on it. The Harley riders in my area give the thumbs up to me on the BA. A friend that owns a used car lot bought a Fat Boy. He said he finally found out what HD stands for. HIGH DOLLAR

My HD buddies say it stands for "hundred dollars." Everything from maintenance tasks to parts and accessories cost at least a c-note.

We have a friend who is a sales lady atan HD dealer, and she's always asking when I'm going to get a Harley. I just tell her that I don't see any good reason to trade down and, while Harleys seem nice enough, I don't know if I can trust the product of a company with so little experience.

As a teenager in '75-77 I rode my '73 bonnie all the time with my best friend and his Sportster. I guess I currently don't think twice about riding w/HD bikers given the respect that you mention above. My TBA has received many compliments...mutual admiration since I, like many, drool over the looks of HD's. At work (Corporate world), there are many HD "owners" who stare dumbfounded when i mention Triumph...it's a good clue that they are clueless...must be " 2nd Mortgage Choppers " (see prior post ) I avoid them.
....or...
it could be your beautiful "Goodwind Green" America. Just a wonderful, calming affect!!! The best color out there!!!
Side note; after high school, I got lucky when someone signed me up for college, my best friend/HD Sportster went to the west coast and joined some Hell's Angel gang...serious. He is out now and doing extremely well but it took years. Hum...Triumph=College, HD=Gang??? Fate??

One important point to keep in mind is that something like 90% of all Harleys ever made are still on the road ..... the other 10% made it home!

Hey Friar, I wouldn't want a chopper, but if you ever see me on one, you can bet your ar$e, I did it myself (with a little help from the experts like painters). I won't be on a store bought chopper.

Funny but me on the TBA didn't get any looks from the Harley crowd 'till I put on the pipes(TORs) But NOBODY has EVER said anything bad about the TBA. Like it's been said here before all the old guys & real bikers have a spot in thier hearts for the TRIUMPHs.I had a salesman from HD take the TBA for a ride & he just loved it.

I can think of 100 different things I'd rather spend my money on than one of those glorified bike-in-a-box choppers. If I did ever have a chopper it'd be a TBA or SM and I'd have the stock frame subtly modified, like this early TBA chop with an extra 5 degree rake.
A few more pictures here.

All I recall for sure is that it was built by a shop in England. I think it showed up on evilbay eventually. I also seemed to recall there was more info posted on the old forum back in '02.

Having ridden nothing but Triumphs since 1969, I agree that Triumphs fit in with the Hardley riders. Even during the 70's when I was riding my chopped 69TR6 in Cal. I rode with almost only HD riders. Some of those boys were HUGE and BAD, always treated me with respect, though. TR
