I have been meaning to do this for a good few months now, but what with the T-birds problems and trying to sort a little room in the garage it finally started today.

The bike is an 02 america and one of the first to come out of the stable at Triumph with the light switch, but it has had a poor life being parked outside until I bought it off one of the lads on here. It was going to be a ride for Bonnie, but she said she could not get use to the feet forward position, hence why there is a Bonneville in the garage.

I bought an '05 while back that had lived its existence parked outside, took a winter of serious rubbing and polishing to rehab. A labor of love as the results testify. web page

Well day 2 I set off with it in my mind to be left with the engine in the frame, and I still have plenty of time for me to enable that. What I did find that the header nuts holding the exhaust into the head were rusted to he11, (see pics above) but after a good soaking beforehand and also while I was stripping the bike down with WD40 they came away really easy leaving the studs in the head at the top and coming adrift at the bottom (see photo below)

My problem is now the crossowver pipe where its jointed the bolt is rusted and causing me hassle (see photo below) otherwise everything is fine.

Also the rails holding the rear guard (Fender) proving to me this is a pre fire america with the dates on.

"Crossover pipe"
"studs removed"

Should be a little further along tomorrow, hopefully the engine should be ready for the out.... May need a lift if anyone local can give us a ring over the weekend, my wrist is not the same these days...

Looking like a good project Ray. do you find that the more bits you take off make it like an assault course to get to the bike in the garage? I do.

I agree Stephen, that is the problem with having two other bikes in the garage as well as load of junk...

It's getting there though just needs another day on it and I should have it somewhere near. The powdercoat guy is going to be busy, mind you he's had a set of wheels of mine in there for three weeks upto now...

You have a great platform to begin with, I would research some of those home powdercoat units that are around now, some run as cheap as $225 that I have seen on the net, what kind of quality do they produce? no clue.

Hi Ryk

I have a sandblaster, but we have a local guy who is pretty good and really cheap on powdercoat, the engine cant be powdercoated as it has to go in the oven which would screw up all the oil seals etc, so it will be treated to a coat of paint..

Looks like you have a bunch of work to get done on that BA there. Kinda reminds me of my wrenchin days with the 650 & 750 Bonnies and sundry other restoration Triumphs I've put together and rode over the years. You've got a great start & can't wait to see the end result.

Ray, I have to ask, seein' as how nobody else here has asked you about the following. You started this thread with this statement:

So, what's up with that beautiful T-bird o' yours there? What did ya mean by "..but what with the T-birds problems" ???

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Picked the bird up yesterday, New pistons, rings and liners and she sounds as sweet as lark first thing in the morning.

I had a look at the liners and pistons they had taken out and was suprised to see the pistons worn at one side and the liners marked to he11.

Anyway it was not my imagination that something was wrong....

Thanks guys, I made enquiries today at the powdercoaters to pinch some sand for my blaster off them and also picked my wheels up for the bird (nice) at the same time. Oh and plenty of advice and even the offer to take the engine in to them so they can keep there eye on me while blasting and etching..

I have a list of items to go in the same place for powdercoating, once all the work has been done I will build it back up again and then run it to a guy at Galgate so he can set everything up on the rolling road....

Well the engine is ready for the out, I think you could of done all of this work in a couple of days if you set your mind to it.

Considering the bike is 10 years old, I did not really have many problems stripping it down. Points to point out are the exhaust nuts and the exhaust crossover bracket, everything came apart quite easy...

Took the engine out on my own today, I can tell you it weighs a bomb. Started taking the very loose powdercoat off as you can see from the photos below.

I managed to undo one fork leg and swop the bottom over inserting new oil seal and dust ring, but the other fork leg is proving to be a bit of a ??????? to undo.

Wow you are having some fun.

I hope you really got a good deal on that bike, cause she is pretty ugly with all the rust and corrosion. But I am sure all it will take is time and money and she will be good as new, or almost. Good luck on your project though! I wouldn't mind finding a Bonneville, Speedmaster or America to chop the he11 out of it and make something custom to my liking.

Damn... so that's what the bottom of the motor looks like! I actually needed to see that. I have a oil leak around my starter and I see that I probably need to check a couple of bolts to make sure they are tight. Very useful. Thank you for posting!

Tighter bolts probably won't stop the oil leak. The starter motor has a nitrile compression o-ring on the end of the case that goes into the crankcase. I've had to replace mine lately and go with a slightly larger width. Not to hijack the thread though you might want to start a new one.

Yes you are right those knee pads have been put on the wrong way round. The rest of the bike is a little bit shabby but before I bought it, it had spent its life parked outside... Hopefully will look alright when it all goes back together...

that clutch shifter rod is pretty cool. Let me know if you wanna sell it. Or if you know where i can get it. I actually have the same bike, in the same color and it just makes me think what mine might look like if it where left out in the cold.
