There is little else in the mechanical world that can warm my heart as does the sound of a motorcycle - except those damned 1300 and 1600 VTX things with after-market pipes. It just ain't natural. The closest similar sound is a Farm-All tractor with a bad muffler. No offense intended. It's just my opinion.

I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Yeah. I think I know what ya mean, Barry. You're talkin' about that "hollow/tinny" kinda sound here, aren't ya?!
I have to admit right after I purchased my BA back in late '01 that was fitted with the shorty off-roads, I thought my bike still wasn't loud enough, and so I punched those pipes straight through...with the result of making them sound like that "hollow/tinny" thing.
After about a year of that, I just couldn't take it anymore, and so I took my original Triumph Longs and only drilled out the first forward baffle, making a much more pleasant deeper rumble sound. I ran those for years until last year when I purchased a set of Sportster mufflers from a member of this website, and now I'm running those, which also make that nice rumble sound.
(...btw, the only reason I switched to the Sportster mufflers was because they're shorter than the Triumph Longs I had, and I was tired of scrapping the tips of those while ridin' in the Twisties around here)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Sure Dwight, we all know you really want a Milwaukee tractor. You just can't go against all the stuff you've said on here. I got ya now.

Right? The left muffler departed my 72 T120 the other night as me and Kimmy were headed out highway 120 toward Buchanan for our weekly ride. She was "duckin and dodgin" trying to miss the muffler. When we stopped to get the muffler, she's like "Is there anything else gonna fall off that thing?". But the sound, not much louder, is frikkin awesome! I said, screw it, I'll just take the other one off! She is one sweet bike! Takes alot away from the looks tho...

Yes, they do remind me of the old John Deere Model B tractor we had when I was a kid(run at high throttle)......actually, the RIII sounds like my old Divco milk truck with a flat-head 6cyl engine......I love those sounds...they bring back memories..kind of like an old song from Traffic or Focus.
