Thats freakin fantastic so simple and yet so effective.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

That is very old technology, they used to light the area below decks in sailing ships the same way except it was a glass prism instead of a bottle..

My Dad, a retired navy man, wants a prism like they have on ships on his tombstone.

Good find Bucky, I learned something today. But, just think prior to the light bulb all but the wealth just went to bed at night fall. The light bulb let us conquer time, much like the internal combustion engine conquered distance.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Must be why families used to be so much larger
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Yes candles and oil lamps were used , but both were relatively expensive and used sparingly by the average family.
