Bikers roll to military funerals to oppose anti-gay protests

FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky (AP) -- Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier's funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.

They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.

Phelps believes American deaths in Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs -- explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.

The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.

"The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares," said Don Woodrick, the group's Kentucky captain. "When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag, that makes a powerful statement."

At least 14 states are considering laws aimed at the funeral protesters, who at a recent memorial service at Fort Campbell wrapped themselves in upside-down American flags. They danced and sang impromptu songs peppered with vulgarities that condemned homosexuals and soldiers.

The Patriot Guard was also there, waving up a ruckus of support for the families across the street. Community members came in the freezing rain to chant "U-S-A, U-S-A" alongside them.

"This is just the right thing to do. This is something America didn't do in the '70s," said Kurt Mayer, the group's national spokesman. "Whether we agree with why we're over there, these soldiers are dying to protect our freedoms."

Shirley Phelps-Roper, a daughter of Fred Phelps and an attorney for the Topeka, Kansas-based church, said neither state laws nor the Patriot Guard can silence their message that God killed the soldiers because they fought for a country that embraces homosexuals.

"The scriptures are crystal clear that when God sets out to punish a nation, it is with the sword. An IED is just a broken-up sword," Phelps-Roper said. "Since that is his weapon of choice, our forum of choice has got to be a dead soldier's funeral."

The church, Westboro Baptist Church, is not affiliated with a larger denomination and is made up mostly of Fred Phelps' extended family members.

During the 1990s, church members were known mostly for picketing the funerals of AIDS victims, and they have long been tracked as a hate group by the Montgomery, Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project.

The project's deputy director, Heidi Beirich, said other groups have tried to counter Phelps' message, but none has been as organized as the Patriot Guard.

"I'm not sure anybody has gone to this length to stand in solidarity," she said. "It's nice that these veterans and their supporters are trying to do something. I can't imagine anything worse, your loved one is killed in Iraq and you've got to deal with Fred Phelps."

Kentucky, home to sprawling Fort Campbell along the Tennessee line, was among the first states to attempt to deal with Phelps legislatively. Its House and Senate have each passed bills that would limit people from protesting within 300 feet of a funeral or memorial service. The Senate version would also keep protesters from being within earshot of grieving friends and family members.

Richard Wilbur, a retired police detective, said his Indiana Patriot Guard group only comes to funerals if invited by family. He said he has no problem with protests against the war but sees no place for objectors at a family's final goodbye to a soldier.

"No one deserves this," he said.

I saw this in my last ABATE newsletter....evidence that extereme, misguided religeous fanatics are not only in the middle east. It is sad and unexcusable. If our founding fathers could see how we have warped our Bill of Rights, I'm sure they would be funding colonization of Mars.

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

It reminds me of thse peace loving hippies who shouted "Baby Killers" to the returning Vietnam troops. Even the wounded got heckeled.

I've known about the Phelps family for awhile now. A year or two ago they came to Helena to protest at local churches (!) that didn't outwardly condemn "the homos." Aside from the lack of bombings and murders, the Phelpses are like christianity's Al Queda (meaning radical extremist religious nutjobs).

IT is an absolute shame on society that a group such as this had to be formed
I was asked just tonight to ride with the Patriot Guard Riders for a military funeral in a small town in S.W.Kansas 3/11
I can't believe we would have to deal with this kind of perverted s&!t behavior. If it is happening here in the middle of nowhere it's happening everywhere. If you would like to get involved in your area contact your local ABATE

Hey, Slojo, I think the Phelps are from Kansas. Can't you do something about them?

I would sure like to!!! It's not that their "opinion" doesent matter,(it doesent matter to me though not one little bit) But there is a time and place for everything. A funeral for anyone is not the place for a silly a$$ political statement! I just hope I can keep my cool at this thing.

I know you say you are the land of the free, but for christ sake!!!
Joe, you go and wave your flag with your head high and let the poor parents know that someone is PROUD of their son/daughter.

PC gone mad. We had a good case of that last November. We have a Rememberance Day, when the old soldiers parade, to remember their fallen comrades. The local council decreed that a march could not happen as the road had potholes and wouldn't be safe for them to walk!!! (not that running up a bloody beach is safe!!) Anyway when the British Legion (group for old soldiers), complained to the council, they were told that they (the council) would have the police stop the march! Anyway to cut short, Old Soldiers arrived for parade, police marched down road and blocked road. When the soldiers came marching out, the police (as if on parade ground) wheeled, parted and lined the road, and saluted the old men as they marched past.
Left one very embarrassed council!!

makes me want to puke...whether you agree with american troops in iraq or not, this is no way to honour the fallen who have families and loved ones mourning them...you don't have to honour the war to honour the warrior...i hate war and killing, but having been a soldier i will honour and respect any armed services personnel from ANY country who conducts himself with honour...and i salute these brothers who are making a stand the honour of fallen comrades..

Phelp's group showed up here in Minnesota at a soldier's funeral this week. It happened that the governor, Tim Pawlenty was at the funeral. He said later that he would sign legislation to keep protesters away from funerals. Good. Nobody who loses a loved one should have to put up with that kind of disrespect.

Phelps and his group are lunatics. They are completely detached from any kind of normal reality. This isn't a case of being too PC. This is a case of group insanity. It's hard to understand how anyone could follow a guy like that, but then, even Charley Manson had his followers.

Is anybody on here involved with the Patriot Riders? Went to their website, it said that the site was too busy and their were upgrading things. It said to email the address that they gave and someone would email ya back. So I emailed them and still haven't heard anything. The area I live in being a very big military area, I was hoping to get involved with them.

Pex, I signed up this week after reading about the incident here in Midwest City, OK. I work for the Air Force and a lot of my friends are in the military and have been deployed to Iraq. If another opportunity comes up I plan on getting there to support.

I was reading on their site that due to media attention the PGR membership has really grown recently.

membership has grown by 2000 in the last few days to total over 12,000. We are riding to a funeral in Kansas this weekend. The website was down for a while, but is now back up, if you are interested-membership is free, but be sure you agree with the goals of the organization-its not just another excuse to ride.
