As pointed out to me by a poster on my original thread, so of the "jerkiness" (besides a reallllllllly worn out chain!) could be the cush-drive. Thanks to FeHorse for telling me what the heck it is!

So my question is: how often have any of you ever replaced this part? and at what milage?

My bike's got 27k on it.

only the once Buddy @ about 5000k (some folks have had to replace @ 1000k even)
replaced it with a cush drive from a mid 90's ThunderBird Sport 50,000k's later still all good

Replaced the original with a T-bird one at 18000. Much better fit.

I did mine when I did chain and sprockets. It wasn't shot, but did show wear. I figured I might as well get all the slop out of the drive-line. I have no way of knowing how big an impact that made, but, I was pleased with the result. Oh, and my mileage was at about the same as yours - 27ish.

I would check with Fast Eddy for chain needs if you have not replaced it yet. I would also check Bike Bandit for the cush drive. #7 is the drive for the Thunderbird sport. Many say that is the one to get.

Replaced both mine with the Tbird ones and have not had anymore concerns with them. They last that long.

I replaced Cinnamon Girl's with a Tbird Cush rubber on December 6, 2007 with 22,785 on the odometer. She now has 77,218.

I replaced Vera Lynn's with a Tbird Cush rubber April 11, 2007 56,900 on the odometer. She now has 90,400.

I had replaced Vera's oem cush drive with another worthless oem cush drive March 2nd, 2005. Mileage record for that is at home.

Will I need a special tool to install/dismatle the axle so's to replace the cush drive?

And where (mail order) should I go to get part #T2012211?

No special tools required. Just the normal stuff in the tool box.

I replaced mine with the T-Bird part # as stated above - my original still looked fine after 30+k miles...changed it with rear tire change.

I honestly can't say I could tell any difference...40k+ later now, still can't. I wouldn't even know what a worn one might do....

My cush drive was replaced on warranty by my dealer (with T-Bird version). 20K later it is still tight. The change was recommended by Triumph and I think they changed production to that later - or least my dealer thought so. My original was loose after 2k miles (2005 America).

Don't know where you are located but Hermy's Tire and Cycle is a great place and good people for stock parts. They have good prices and tend to stock most stuff.

The most difficult part is getting the wheel off and the original chain. My friend Donny had to use a dremell on one of the links since it doesn't have a master. The cush drive is easy to put in. I had close to 25k when we replaced the chain and cush drive and also a rear brake rotor. I think you were asking about the different size sprocket in a different thread. I believe we went with a 19 tooth because it was kind of like having an overdrive since I do a lot of highway miles. If you want to be quicker off the line, then the 17 tooth is the way to go. I think that is what is standard on the SM. Have fun.

Thanks to all for the replys! I've got, I think, the original chain. If nothing else, to get it off I could just un- bolt the old back sprocket yes?, or the front one? in either case, I intend to change out the chain although yesterday I just tightened the old one and it ran like a top. However it still has some jerk. So as to the cush, could I use this one?

I personally would not use a used cush drive as you really don't know what kind of mileage it has on it or how long it has sat (i.e. rotting rubber or cracked). Play it safe and buy a new one.

Your chain adjustment won't last 100 miles before you need to adjust the tension again, thus is the nature of worn out chains...

Don't even think about changing the chain without changing out at least the front sprocket. Failure to change out the front sprocket will destroy your chain in less than 1,000 miles.

You cannot simple unbolt the sprockets to remove the chain. The swingarm will not allow removal of the chain (without removing the swingarm itself). Look closely at the chain path.

The method of removing the chain is to cut the chain. Cutting involves pushing one of the chain link pins out. OR using an angle grinder to literally cut a link off. The issue you will have is how to rivet the new master link (for the new chain) back on. One way around riveting is to purchase a clip style master link.

Do yourself a favor and purchase an oem chain kit from Clinton Cycles. http://www.hermys.com/

You have to remove the rear wheel to replace the rear sprocket. Before you cut the chain, loosen up the chain ring bolts and loosen the big azz nut on the front sprocket. An impact gun will break the torque on the big azz nut if the chain has already been cut off. But chances are you don't have one thus leaving the chain on (and using the rear brake (leaving the bike in gear maybe) to hold the sprockets in place while you loosen up the nuts.

Heck you might consider buying the chain kit and bringing your bike (and the chain kit) to ANY shop and have them change the chain out. Price around as some shops will do the job for 20 bucks.

To check the cush drive, simple grasp the rear chain ring and try to rotate it clockwise then counterclock wise. You should observe very little rotation.
